I'd suggest bisecting the commits to find the culprit, i.e. where it broke.

No, I'm still trying to understand what happens, it seems the meshes have the hlms_colour defined, so they haven't really lost the buffer, but the foliage don't move as expected, so I'm guessing the halfPosition/halfUVs are messing with the color values in the vertex color buffer (maybe they are all black, still there, still setting the hlms_colour, but all black?).
