Use of terrain generators for RPG type games

Post by Maluk »

Are terrain generators really useful for RPGs? From what I have been reading, terrain generators generate terrain from heightmaps. This means that your heightmap should be very detailed (zoomed in upto the actual character level) for it to be useful else your character might appear like a giant walking the terrain.

If they are useful, where and how can you get heightmaps?
