Since you lack funding etc. I would simply start by doing some very simple benchmarking scenes, to show how much better OGRE handles things than the BGE - I think you would get a lot more interest and help from other developers if you could show up front the kind of gains that were possible.
e.g. a forest with 1000 trees might slow the BGE to a crawl but perform at high frame rates in OGRE - Currently its just speculation. While I don't doubt OGRE can be used to render scenes with better performance than the BGE, any kind of numbers would help.
