OGRE Statuette - thank you everyone!
I just had one of the biggest surprises I can remember having! My cousin Kieran dropped a bombshell on me today as we met up for a social, revealing that you, the OGRE community had designed and had created an OGRE statuette to commemorate my time as project lead. He proceeded to present it to me, and it's absolutely amazing, just incredible. I was utterly gobsmacked, and also very, very touched.
I've uploaded larger pictures to Flickr (recommended, you can see the amazing detail on it there), but I've embedded some thumbnails below too: Originals on Flickr
I had absolutely no idea this was going on, literally not even the slightest inkling that even something was going on, never mind something as amazing as this. The statuette is a fantastic design, featuring what I believe is Omniter's Ogre model with also a great surround & pose etc. It really is wonderful.
Thank you all so much for doing this, I never expected anything like this, and it's extremely clear to me how much thought, time and effort has gone into making this happen. I'm truly very, very touched, and very grateful. I don't know precisely who was directly involved - Kieran was a bit vague on this bit except that he was contacted by Jacmoe - I'd love to hear about exactly how this was all brought together - but it just stuns me that you would do something so personal, and so awesome, for me. I will treasure this until the day they put me in a box.
I'm going to stop now before I go overboard and do a Halle Berry Oscar moment. Thank you, everyone, this means a great deal to me.

We were going to send you a real ogre, but we couldn't get him to fit inside the box.
It punched Jacmoe in the spleen and nearly tore off Metaldev's toes before we had to let him go.

Wow looking at the photo I feel like I was in there looking at you, Mr Sinbad. That's the greatest detail I have seen you in pictures and in there, I can still see from your face all the hard and dedicated work you put into making Ogre library as incredible as it is now. I love this thread hehe

Cause they got no place to be

The idea is so nice that I regret it's not mine. Darn.
Nah. I will say. Ogre is great and its unbelievable that someone so involved in such a project can still look so fresh and young .syedhs wrote: I can still see from your face all the hard and dedicated work you put into making Ogre library as incredible as it is now.

Re: OGRE Statuette - thank you everyone!
Let me reveal that the conspiracy started when Spannerman started sending PMs around, and pretty soon (May 01, 2010) - in a dark, hidden corner of the net - people were starting to post cryptic messages in a Lemme' In forum, which led to a very secret Conspirators forum...
Thanks to the awesome modelling skills of Metaldev, and the combined powers of the secret club, we managed to succeed in producing the statuette.
I am so happy that our little conspiracy turned out so well!

Re: OGRE Statuette - thank you everyone!
Steve,
Congrats!
At least speaking for myself, you are one of my personal heroes.
It was my pleasure putting in the effort to help make this happen. I am sure many of the others feel the same way.
It's not every day you get the chance to do something directly for one of your life heroes so i jumped at the chance!
I wanted to design something that would show your great grandkids what a badass you were - even after you are dead, and how highly you and your work are appreciated.
Since you asked about how it came together, here are some of the original ideas and wip images that we voted and collaborated on to narrow down to what we felt was the best design. We finally decided on the stone design for practical as well as representational reasons. In fact, the source model was Omniter's Sinbad model (now you see why i converted it to maya ) - and he worked with me to get it the way it became. Most of the designs feature Sinbad with one sword in and one sword out - symbolizing how you have retired, but not left the project. The final design I had called the 'stone' design since it features sinbad splitting a stone, one half a real stone, the other hard edged, triangular, and representing what Ogre 3D does - turning data into dreams, basically.
- WIP 1
- WIP 2
- WIP 3
and finally... THE FINAL TURNAROUND ^^
in case anyone is wondering, the main sculpt is about 2 million tris, the backplate with the text is another 2 million.
Enjoy it Steve!
It is our pleasure to present this to you!
Thanks to everybody ^_^ !!
... and a very special thanks to my fellow conspirators!

Re: OGRE Statuette - thank you everyone!
That's seriously cool!
It's great to see what has been done and I want to thank all of the people who did this because I think sinbad definitely deserves it.
I must say that I always thought of this as the warmest on-line community that I had found and this confirms that. I think thanks to that must go to sinbad because the leader sets the tone and the tone of this community is very pleasant. I wish sinbad stays around because he has the kind of an attitude which is required to keep this place warm and welcoming.
Sinbad has received the award as a result of his own attitude. It is like when we gave a superb engineering school mathematics teacher a bottle of expensive wine at the end of the course as a way to thank him collectively - the students will let the teacher know if they really, really like the teacher!

This is how a retirement should always be! It feels so much better now!
This deserves the following awards : best project lead & best community out there.
(BTW The conspiracy even started sooner, I received Spannerman's message on April, the 29th).
Thanks to all those who made this happen.

Re: OGRE Statuette - thank you everyone!
Awesome! Thanks for the extra details, and metaldev, you did a fantastic job on the model. I was amazed at the detail on it when I received it, and I'm now even more impressed having seen the development process and how the community got involved in the decision process. As other people have said already, this community is amazing, and I'm very proud to be involved in it, even if I'm not plugged in 24/7 like I used to be
Thank you all so much again for all the thought and effort that went into this. You guys are amazing!

It's some sort of dense resin coated in a bronze-like finish, it's quite a common material in a lot of modern figurines. It feels very chunky and robust, which is reassuringMatheus Martino wrote:What is the material used on the statuete? (bronze, copper, plastic, etc)

Some related news:
Offload Studios, the company we hired to print out Steve's trophy, asked me if they could publish pictures of the statue on their monthly newsletter.
I said of course! (everybody should know how awesome Ogre and Steve Streeting are!)
They asked me to write a small paragraph on what it was like to work with them, they were very good with us, after all:
Steve's trophy is July's 'featured tactual' !

congratulation Metaldev, for this incredibly wonderful project
and Sinbad, you are a hero to all of us here, you know, don't you
I was wondering if such statuette could become some sort of Ogre goodies.
As an item that could be sold in order to contribute. but I guess it's very expensive, isn't it. I'd love to have one

That would be totally out of the question:
This is a one of a kind award.
And, besides: we promised that he won't have to share it with anyone. Ever.
