Kudos

Post by jacmoe »

Maybe you've noticed that you've got a new 'Kudos' field in your profile? :)

We have installed a Kudos mod which enables you to give Kudos to the author of a post.

So if you like a post because you find it useful, and you think the author deserves a Kudos for writing it, you can click the new Kudos button ('thumbs up') and the Kudos will be recorded.

Why did we do this? :)

Let me quote our project founder Sinbad:
I think in cases where we want to recognise good community members, some kind of karma mod might be useful where users can give kudos / karma themselves. I generally try to avoid mods, but this is one case where it would probably be justified, to make sure people get recognised for their good everyday work in the community
So, what's the basic idea?

Let me quote Masterfalcon:
masterfalcon wrote:So the basic idea is similar to rating posts on stackoverflow? I could see that being helpful, especially to new users. It could increase the confidence they have in certain peoples' advice.
Post count is not always an indicator of quality.
Kudos count could be.

Also, we want to recognize all those community members who take the time - and put effort into - writing quality posts.

If you want to be notified of when one of your posts makes you receive Kudos, you can set that up in User Control Panel - Board Preferences - Global Settings.

Thanks! :wink:

ahhhhh I like this!

In some other forums (ZBcentral for one) they have an annoying star system.

You rate the whole thread between 1-5 stars, and you can't then change your vote. I've seen new people there get 1 star for their work, even if it deserved better, and never post again!

This is better, someone can give you a Kudos point, and it won't hurt your ego not to get it. :D

I am as shocked as you are. :)

There's two reasons for the changes:
1) Kudos Mod: We finally found the only mod that Sinbad would have installed.
2) Syntax Highlighting: It's so easy to install that it would be silly not to install it, as it costs next to nothing on our server.

Oh oh! Adding a points system to a forum full of gamers and game devs? Someone is going to exploit the system for sure. :twisted:

I've already voiced my concerns about kudos degenerating into an office politics popularity contest in the "New ranks" thread, so I won't recap that.

Instead, I just want to say I think it's being over-emphasized. It's in bold near my name, there's two links to kudos related lists at the top of every page (who's getting it, who's giving it, etc), and the forum indexes themselves list "Kudos rates" under each thread title.

It's kudos overkill. Just a plain-type number near my name and a note on the post that generated it would be plenty.

Just overlook it. It's easy enough. You won't notice it after a while.
I modded the original phpbb mod to tone it down a bit.
It's the general idea which matters.
And, most importantly: we can't please everyone. :)

But I have to cut some slack for mkultra33: I was also surprised that the kudos are bold. Think that is unneceassry and disturbing too. Would rather like to see them in normal plain (= not bold) text!

Just get 0. I have and it's not bold. ;)

EDIT: Thank you to whoever gave me the kudos point. Now my comment makes no sense. ;) LOL

+1 for normal/non-bold kudos count, at the very least to make it consistent with the rest of the text.

Following the Kudoses at the top there, I managed to find out the person who gave me my first ever Kudos point was so0os. Thanks so0os! :D

you can see who gives out points, who and what they gave the points to, and what points they receive.

Now I agree this is nice, but for the sake of bruised egos would you think this should be anonymous?

Not really a big deal, but just checking.

It's actually a unexpected style issue; ".postprofile dt.author a" specifies that all links in the .postprofile <dl> (the section to the right of your post text), should be in bold. The Kudos link is just a normal link, that the browser automatically makes bold because it's a link in the postprofile <dl>. I suppose Jacmoe could make a style css exception, but that's a bit more tricky without a class or ID to work from. I guess I could work up a kludge but it would be modern browser specific (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and modern IE).

Edit:

Code: Select all

.postprofile strong + a
{
 font-weight: normal !important;
}
That works in Firefox 4.0b10, but that should work in other browsers since it is normal CSS.

Just append that code snippet to the bottom of the main css file, and you should be good to go.
