Ogre3D Based Game Sales

Post by EricB »

Hello everyone,

These are steam owners as of Q3 2017 as reported by SteamSpy. SteamSpy calculates these numbers by checking a list of games owned by a random sampling of profiles. Then using statistic comes up with the approximate amount of copies owned/given away. I can only say with my game sales, the numbers are pretty close to accurate (roughly 5% +/-) The more copies sold the more accurate the approximations will be. Thew fewer copies the game has sold, the less accurate it will be. Anything less than 10,000 units should be taken with a grain of salt.

If I am missing any Ogre3d games, please let me know!

Please note this is only copies sold on Steam and not other platforms. Sales are estimated and rounded down to prevent chart fluctuations due to margin of error in the estimations. As such sales numbers listed here are probably lower than actual units sold, however they should provide an accurate measurement of the minimum number of games sold.

Visit the wiki for sortable columns, links, reviews, and more information: http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/tiki-ind ... ef_id=2187

The rounding is as follows:
Medium number of units owned in the last 2 weeks.
<1,000 rounded down by the hundreds.
<10,000 rounded down by the thousands.
<100,000 rounded down by the 5 thousands.
<200,000 rounded down by the 10 thousands.
<1,000,000 rounded down by the 25 thousands.
>1,000,000 rounded down by the 100 thousands.

Re: Ogre3d Based Game Sales

So I had a little more time to kill to find some Ogre games. What does all Ogre games have in common? That's right! Ogre Exception!
A quick google search using Steam Ogre Exception yielded a few games I never seen before, on steam, using ogre:

Kromaia
Emergency 2016
Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms
TrackVerse
Haunted (?)
Legends of Pegasus
Warside
Vector Thrust
Damned
Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends

I am however going to be an ass and publicly shame Jetdogs Studios, makers of Alchemy Mysteries for being such sticklers that they requested Steam Spy to not list their game. So, get off your high horse Jetdog! Shame shame shame!

*Updating The list now*
Chart will be updated sometime in the future...

Searching the forums I found a few more gems that have gone unnoticed... I've also started a wiki entry with the sales chart and will cross post it with the Community Projects wiki page... I'll link on here when it's ready.

MotorM4X: Offroad Extreme
DUNGEONS - Steam Special Edition
Vitrum
Sacraboar
I Shall Remain
APOX
Proun
Primal Fears

*Updating charts now.*

Please if you know of any finished commercial games, steam or not, post here! I only have so much free time... Soon my program will be running so fast I won't have any time to do silly stuff like this!

This is really interesting, thank you very much!
I didn't know most of those games, there must be many more things made with Ogre to find, many not on steam, and many non-game apps (like what I do: simulation)

hey good luck with the profiling :P

That is very true. You would be surprised if you knew which (big) companies have used Ogre.

Cateia Games' Hotel is another ogre one. http://store.steampowered.com/app/288750 (found a person on the wine forum saying it wouldn't start because ogremain.dll was missing)
Rebel Galaxy apparently uses Ogre 2.1, but also supports the DX9 renderer, which is a bit odd. http://store.steampowered.com/app/290300 (Looks damn nice)

Wow, Rebel Galaxy looks damn nice! Didn't know about it.
Though I doubt their Ogre 2.1 is our Ogre 2.1
It has DX9 support and I don't see Item factories being registered. Plus it runs on OS X. I read they've licensed the engine from Torchlight, so probably Torchlight made heavy modifications and internally renamed the engine to 2.1

The Wiki page is up: http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/tiki-ind ... ef_id=2187 Go there for links, review scores, and sortable content.

Added some more games, thanks to Kojack.

Sickbrick
Hotel Collectors Edition
Rebel Galaxy
Pulse Shift -- Not on Steam
Homura Combat -- Not on Steam
HitMania! -- Not on Steam

I know there is a f1 like racing game on steam that uses Ogre, I can't remember the name of it though. Also a farming game and some others in the main page... I can't recall their names.

On the topic of RG, the developers comments on about Ogre: http://steamcommunity.com/app/290300/di ... 1428116852

So it's Ogre enough to be Ogre I think. (on a side note, apparently you guys are degenerates... http://steamcommunity.com/app/290300/di ... 9195078537)

Oh there are lots of open source games, vaporware, unbuilt engines, cellphone games, and simulators as you mentioned. I didn't document them, but if you come across any feel free to post them on here, and I'll add them to the wiki.

My main purpose of this is to see how well my game (GearCity) is doing compared to other commercial Ogre3D games. Since I make business simulators obviously I love data! :) As a side effect after making this list, I thought it'd be good to share the data/info since the tiki and the showcase is lacking a LOT of information about how wide spread Ogre is being used.

After I'm done profiling, I have to improve AI :'( luckily the game can play it self.

De Blob was originally an Ogre3D game.

It caught the attention of THQ and the game was remade for multiple platforms, and apparently without using Ogre. Not sure if you want to put it on the list.

The Dead Linger first alpha versions were originally released under the Ogre engine. Then later they moved to Unity, and finally settled with Unreal Engine 4.

I think it'd be better to keep the Commercial List to games that are running Ogre if you were to buy them right now. :)

I did a search of steamdb.info "ogremain.dll". Steamdb list the package manifests of games on steam, so I can see everything using ogremain.dll. Just to double check to make sure said game uses ogre, I'd search the steam forums for info. I also found a few games searching for Ogre.log...

Masterspace
ThunderWheels--DEMO on Steam
Operation Barbarossa: The Struggle for Russia--Not On steam
Symulator Jazdy 2--Not on Steam
Catan: Creator's Edition
Enemy
Dungeons the Dark Lord
Victory: The Age of Racing
Iron Roses

Just to give precise sales count, at this point we have sold 2,506 units of BOMB ;)

Also, you can add this game (I've worked on it, porting Ogre on Wii & PS3) http://www.metacritic.com/game/wii/arth ... -maltazard although I cannot give you how many units were sold.

As mentioned, the lower the sales are the less accurate the stats will be. Sales numbers for anything under 20,000 fluctuate a bit on Steam Spy, but it's within range. Case in point, you're reported to sell 2600 units as of right now on Steam Spy: http://steamspy.com/app/301500

So while not perfect, it's close enough for government work. :)

Thanks for the game, I'll put it on my list.

I'll probably update sales figures in Feb.

i like this thread...figthing the "why should i even consider using ogre?" depression spreading in this community....
if you look at unity survy https://unity3d.com/public-relations you can see clearly that their biggest compatitor is the "Native code/Custom engine" thing

i suggest to make a "sticky thread" on the showcase forums concentrating all the above info( maybe+youtube links )
i think its very important for open-source to attract clients as any potential ogre user/developer can become a valuable asset to this project and community

anyway to add ...https://www.roblox.com
roblox was the most successful ogre based game world, sadly they decisded to drop the millions they made using ogre on their own custom rendrer instead of improving and contributing to the tech that helped them grow...
the woods are lovely dark and deep

Updated Main Chart as of Feb 1st. (TOP Post)

First off made a typo, Garshasp: Temple of Dragon sold over 30,000 copies. I accidentally put played recently count numbers of 7,000. I've fixed this both in the previous chart below as well as the new chart in the OP.

Mostly margin of error movements in the charts. The next update will be a month away (March 1st-ish) so any major movement trends should be more noticeable.

The only clear sales trend is of course Scrap Mechanic as it has moved into the top 15. Doubling it's sales in 2 weeks. (100% growth is well outside the margin of error! )

I've added Arthur and the Revenge of Maltazard thanks to Crashy.

anyway to add ...https://www.roblox.com
roblox was the most successful ogre based game world, sadly they decisded to drop the millions they made using ogre on their own custom rendrer instead of improving and contributing to the tech that helped them grow...
Roblox is mentioned in the tiki page. I will not be adding it to my list for the same reason the games dark_sylinc mentioned are not. Roblox no longer ships their game with Ogre. Therefore I can't buy a copy of Roblox today and play an Ogre based video game. So it won't be added to my Ogre Commercial games list. Nor my Ogre-Based Steam Sales chart.

Updating the tiki now. Hope you all enjoy!

Here is the previous Jan 26th 2016 Chart:

Next month I'll probably start rounding down the numbers to prevent marginal amount changes. If half of the 22 day bar chart pass the limit that will be the sales numbers.
<1,000 will be rounded by the hundreds.
<10,000 will be rounded by the thousands
<100,000 will be rounded by the 5 thousands
<250,000 will be rounded by the 25 thousands
and >million by the hundred thousands.

Makes for less typing for me too. ;)

Found some more games while waiting around:
Stained
Racecraft (Knew about this one, but it just launched free copies to Victory buyers, so time to add to list.)
