Re: Ogre3D Based Game Sales

Post by EricB »

Happy 4th of July everyone!~ (No offense British people, you're probably not happy on this day ;) )

The sales chart in the very top post has been updated with July 4th numbers. Also I updated the review scores on the wiki page: http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/tiki-ind ... les+Charts

The July numbers have a few days of the Summer Sales numbers in them. However I take into account 22 days of sales numbers to adjust the positions on the charts. I typically require 11-13 days above the next rounding spot to move up in sales, and 20ish days to move down in sales. As such the full effect of the Summer Sales are not in this chart. August will show a better indication of movement.

-Torchlight 2 remains the top selling/played Ogre3d title on Steam. It's not reflected in the charts, but there is a good chance with its sale this week it'll move up 100,000 units in next month's chart.

-Scrap Mechanic continues its growth, easily breaking the 300,000 unit barrier. And from the looks of its growth chart, it should have no problems breaking 325,000 by next months' numbers.

-Both Dungeon's had a noticeable increase in owners. Both titles moved 20,000 copies. I did not do any research but one would assume the game was bundled together and on sale at some third party retailer. The Original version breaking 180,000 where as the "The Dark Lords" version hit 150,000.

-Rebel Galaxy saw a 30,000 unit movement to 150,000 copies. It should have enough sales growth to jump 2 or 3 spots by next month's charts.

-Catan: Creator's Edition jumped two spots to 18th, finally hitting the 60,000 unit barrier.

-Ankh jumped ahead of I Shall Remain for 47th. Possibly due to statistical margins. But The Body Changer solidifies its hold on 46th.

-Battlezone 98 Redux growth stumbles a month after release. It failed to break the 15,000 unit mark according to Steam Spy. However, with the update to reviews scores on the wiki, it is now the 4th best rated game made with Ogre.

For the most part, many games saw increases in sales over June. But not much movement in the charts. We'll see what happens in August after more summer sales numbers work in and folks start returning the extra games they bought.

Hello everyone,

I'm running a little late with a patch for my game this month so the Sales list is going to be a couple of days late this month. Sorry.

Re: Ogre3D Based Game Sales

Post by EricB »

The main chart in the OP and the wiki has been updated.

Commentary:

The dust has finally settled after the Steam Summer Sale (and most folks who would return games, already have.) We see quite a bit of sales bumps on the charts, and a couple of position changes.

Scrap Mechanic continued it's growth pace to his 350,000 units. However looking at Steam Spy's charts, it looks like the rapid day to day increase while not discounted is over. I called that once before, and was completely wrong.

Victory Age of Racing Free to Play had another 25,000 people play the game at least once. They remain the top F2P Ogre game on Steam.

Rebel Galaxy had an amazing Summer Sale, jumping from 120,000 units at the start of June to 170,000 (Almost 180,000) at the start of this month. This is enough of a boost to push them ahead of 'Zombie Driver' and 'Dungeons the Dark Lord' into 9th place.

Garshasp: The Monster Slayer breaks the 60,000 unit mark and moves ahead of Nimbus for the 19th position on our chart.

Both Venetica and Vector Thrust break the 30,000 mark. Venetica jumps a spot ahead of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms for 30th. Vector Thrust passes 3 games: RaceCraft, Salvation Prophecy, and Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms for 31st.

Jack Keane breaks 25,000 units and moves into 35th ahead of Void Destroyer

Vitrum hits 20,000 and takes 38th from Kromaia.

Finally Battlezone 98 Redux nudges Hotel and Masterspace for 42nd.

That's it for this month! Remember to check out the wiki page for sortable list, review scores, and links to the game's pages.

Also if you know of any commercial Ogre games on Steam that is not on this list. Let me know!

Re: Ogre3D Based Game Sales

Post by EricB »

Updated the OP with September 1st sales numbers.

Not much change in the charts positions. A couple of games saw slight bounce in units, but for the most part sales slowed down after the summer sale and the start of the school season.

One interesting note, SteamSpy no longer allows publishers/developers to remove data from their sites. This comes after Paradox requested that their data be removed: http://www.pcgamer.com/paradox-data-rem ... y-request/
SteamSpy later decided to reverse their decision. And remove all publisher/developer data blackouts. Kerbal Space Program developers then claimed that this sort of data is dangerous: http://www.pcgamer.com/a-game-developer ... in-danger/ even though they publicly announce their total sales figures in youtube videos...

Of note, as a developer, I strongly support SteamSpy's work. The video game industry needs some sort of transparent sales reporting agency much like the Movie, Radio, TV, and Music industry has. Unfortunately the few that exist are just as inaccurate as SteamSpy and costs a lot of money (Or only report the largest of the large games.) SteamSpy aggregates public data from Steam's API, so if the big anal publishers/developers want to hide their Steam sales, they need to put pressure on Steam to change/remove the API. And the gaming community as a whole will suffer for it. (Then it's back to my formula: 80 * number of reviews = sales ;) )

So what this whole drama rant mean for Ogre? We have sales data for Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends!!!
That's right, the same game that occupied last because the publisher was too snobbish to release the data now occupies a position in our charts!
It moved up into 16th position with approximately 95,000 sales.

From the videos I've seen, I suspect we'll have another 100k+ game on the chart! ;)

Word of advice though, try to keep your reviews scores up! Unless your gameplay is bad, the majority of your negative reviews will be due to stability/crashes. Be sure you test on all OS's, specially Win10. And on outdated drivers (You may want to implement some sort of driver checker in game.) Every review "text tier" (Mixed, Mostly Positive, Positive, Very Positive, etc) increases your "More Like This" views. And the more page views you have, typically the more sales you'll get. For instance, GearCity has been 79% for a few months. A day after we hit 80%, page views increased 20-30% and have remained that high. In the past when I have seen this bounce, and it would go back down 20-30% when we fell back to 79% reviews.

Be sure to let me know when you launch, and I'll add it to the wiki.

With the changes to SteamSpy, I went back and checked the numbers for two ill fated games that were built with Ogre but pulled from Steam. I've added these numbers to the OP chart and the wiki page.

MotorM4X had roughly 6000 in sales before it was pulled from Steam. This puts it in 51st.

Legends of Pegasus sold about 30,000 copies before it was pulled from Steam. This puts it in 33rd on our sales chart.

Re: Ogre3D Based Game Sales

Post by EricB »

Chart on OP/Wiki has been updated for October's numbers.

September is typically a slow month, and it shows in the charts. Not much movement from anyone. Be it in terms of sales or in chart positions. Nimbus, the highest rated game released with Ogre, breaks 60,000 average range, and jumps up a spot above Catan: Creator's Edition for 20th. Lower on the charts, Vitrum moves up to 38th with 25,000 owner average and Emergency 2016 also jumps 2 more spots into 45th with 15,000 owners.

In other news, I have found access to Steam's API. If anyone is interested in making a website to do all this stuff let me know. Seems like Steamspy's API provides a json file via php. I was thinking of using something like Datatables to make a table and automatically sort positions on the chart. Sadly I don't have enough free time or javascript skills to do this. But I'm sure such a page would be much better than my forum chart.

Re: Ogre3D Based Game Sales

Updated the sales chart yesterday but didn't get to add commentary.
http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 62#p522506

Across the board sales went up this October. Many games bounced into the next estimated levels. However there wasn't much position movement in the charts. You would have to look down toward the bottom to find any changes. Jack Keane jumped 3 positions into 34th with 30,000 copies. Further down, Emergency 2016 moved 3 spots into 42nd with 20,000 copies. Finally toward the bottom, I Shall Remain had a massive spike in sales, nearly 30%. Moving it 2 spots into 48th with 10,000 copies.

In other news, It was brought to my attention on IRC that Scrap Mechanic is changing engines. It seems they decided to roll their own engine due to some animation and frame rate issues in Ogre. In my personal opinion this is a result of too much success too quickly. I estimate Scrap Mechanic has made around $3-6 million dollars in revenues. With such amount of resources they got it in their head it would be best to make the perfect game rather than roughing it out with their old code base even if it results in a less than optimal experience. If you've ever talked design with me on IRC, you'll know it's my belief that constant designing and rewriting old code often leads to unfinished projects. More likely than not, with this engine change Scrap Mechanic has just lengthened its development time in Early Access considerably. It's also quite possible that the many issues they run into while designing their own engine will be worse than Ogre's issues. All of this costs money, and while they have a lot of it now, they run the risk of becoming one of those never-completed, constantly developing, Early Access games. Fortunately for them, I do believe they have the monetary resources to pull off such a conversion. They need to be careful about image until the new engine is completed. As they have had a lack of updates to their Ogre version, and the new engine version is buggy. Both of which will drive down reviews and that in turn drives down sales.

Now, as for our charts. I will monitor games that decide to switch engines while they're for sale. After the default build (non opt-in betas) are officially changed to the new engine, I will stop updating their sales figures on the charts. Thus leaving the total number of Ogre copies owned. While not working in any new copies of the new engine into the charts. These type of games will be marked with an &.

Many thanks for your patronage!

Just a little advice, you may want to switch to Testing build (Steam's beta tabs), as my Default build is always a few months behind. And I've made a lot of changes since July. (Although Default build will be updated on the 11th.)

Also the game has a very steep learning curve and a very small tutorial. So if you have issues feel free to contact me, make a forum post, or find some "Let's play" videos on youtube. Once you get the hang of it though (and the "Clunky" UI) it's pretty easy to play.

I ran into the same "Keep going or Rewrite" issue with GC when it comes to the GUI systems. QuickGUI was abandoned around 2012, and I was left without an editor and some useful functions. I stuck with QuickGUI and wrote all the GUI sheets by hand. In this case, I would have probably been better off switching to MyGUI or CEGUI as I noticed the problem early in development. As I progressed and the problem became worse, it would cost more and more to switch out GUI systems. Eventually I reached the point of no return. It hasn't hurt me too much. Switching might have shaved off some development time and improved some features, but on the other hand, you can't really be too sure how much time it would take to convert over and how many unknown bugs would pop up in your code... So I think it was better to stick it out with QuickGUI and make sure I don't make the same mistake on my next project.

I did a quick skim of the net again to see if I can find new Ogre3d games on Steam.

I came across bigfishgames's forums, and in there was a number of Ogre Exceptions from users of new games...
So here is a list of the game, their steam page, and proof. They'll be added to the List next update.
Sinister City - Proof

Some other commerical non-steam games for the day I ever get around making a list of those:

http://forums.bigfishgames.com/posts/li ... ge#4745304
http://forums.bigfishgames.com/posts/li ... ge#1596145

11 games in this series, 1 is on steam. The steam one is not using Ogre, but at least 2 on this forum are running Ogre. The older ones in the series might be as well.

Couple more I found using SteamDB:

Drakerz - Proof

This one is currently a demo and has both unity and ogremain.dll... Probably should download it and see which it's using. In any event, something to keep our eye in in case it turns out to being an ogre game.
Undone: Project Nightmare Demo - Proof

Re: Ogre3D Based Game Sales

Post by EricB »

Chart has been updated with to December 3rd numbers. I will most likely make a graph at the end of the year...

We have a new game released with Ogre! Emergency 2017 came out in October. This is an expansion to Emergency 5 (which was re-released as Emergency-2016.) As such, Emergency 2016 has been discontinued. From what I read on their forums, it seems Emergency 2016 owners got a discount for Emergency 2017. In any event it opens at 53rd on our charts with 7000 owners.

Two additional games were added to the charts. Sinister City and DRAKERZ. Both games were made in 2014. Sinister City comes from the makers of Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends. It enters the charts at 10th with 190,000 owners. Drakerz is a free to play card game, and has had at least 120000 downloads. It enters 16th.

Outside of the new entries into our list. There was quite a few increases in unit counts this month. Part of this comes from the fall sales, some of it was from the October sales... Since I average 3 weeks worth of sales, the full effect of the Fall sales aren't realized in the charting.
Rebel Galaxy is the big mover. 50,000 new owners are being reported. It jumps 3 spots into 6th with 250,000 units and is trending to pass Damned next month. I haven't investigated why such a movement yet. Free to play game Warside hops Dungeons the Dark Lord into 12th. Kenshi leaps Zero Gear for 14th. And finally down towards the bottom, Battlezone 98 Redux moves 2 spots into 45th with 20,000 units.

Anyhoo, I'm pretty busy this month. Sorry for the lack of details in the summary.
Till next time!
