Gravity

Post by Scrat »

Hi all,
This game was created in one week because of a bet I made. In this way, it is really not exempt of bugs. Moreover, the game could be greatly improved but the deal was to make it in one week. Feel free to improve it and to make it perfect :)

Purpose:
It's quiet simple, you've got 3 types of objects and you must make the highest pyramid.
The first object is a cylinder and to be honest, it's the easiest one by far !
The second object is a box. A small box which is quiet difficult to make a pyramid with it.
The last object is a stick. This one is really difficult. Maybe too much. I'm pretty sure that it's impossible to make a pyramid with more than 10 stickes.

Gameplay:
- You can throw objects with the mouse's left button
- You can switch objects by pressing the mouse's right button
- You can change the speed to which the objects are thrown by pushing the spacebar button

Featuring:
- Newton. I used the excellent Walaber's wrapper (By the way, thanks you very much !)
- CEGUI (Note: I took the default skin)
- FMod. Really not important in this project as I only set the wind. The fact is that it made me learn how to use this library. (Note : the more you will go high, the more the sound of the wind will be strong ;))

Source:
I'm releasing the source in the hope that it could help someone. The source is fully commented :)

Render:
I made some different versions.
* In the first one there was just a plane with a black background
* In another one I used a skybox and a 'mirror' plane wich reflects everything (objects + skybox) --> that was quiet strange
* In the last version, I mixed the first version wich the second one (mirror plane + black background)

I kept all these versions. You'll find them in the zip.

Although, pay attention that the last two versions are much slower !

Well, I think that's it !
Oh and BTH my highest score is 83 meters ;)

You can download the game here
You can download the CS here (just note that I may have omitted to remove some french commentary. But don't worry most of them are in english ;))

I played it. It's a funny idea, especially making a competition around piling up stones. Impressive achievement for one week of work.
the game definately has potential, you could add some features to improve gameplay.
like a quickview for the stone i've selected right know, and more sensitive camera movement.
Better graphics and more stones / scenarios would make it more interesting. Ever thought about implementing partice effects?

just my 2 cents, I liked it it was easy to learn but very hard to master.
kind regards
Jens.

I got 190 metres! :).... but I cheated  I just spawned the objects at ground level knowing newton thoughtfully pushes the others up slowly ;) Got about 50 metres without cheating

Jens_K > Thank you. Yes I totally agree with you about the improvement. The fact is that I've got an idea of a (much bigger) project using Newton too and this little project was made to test if I could do some functions that I thought hard to implement. But now I think I've understood the basics of how to use CEGUI, FMOD and Newton (wich I didn't know at all a week ago), so the next step for me is to make a much more 'professional' game :)
But anyway, thanks for your words/suggestions. I really appreciate !

Vectrex > lol yeah I got 83 meters... cheating too  :D. At fisrt, I removed the fact of throwing objects at ground level but it was much less fun !
after all, a game is made for enjoying ourselves
Thanks for your comments too !

omg I suck at this. Great game tho! It took a good 1/2 hour to get 40 m.

On a side note, I don't think ODE could do this since it is not as good at stacking. Is that guess correct?
