Re: Tales of the USCA : Ship of the Week

Post by christianboutin.com »

This is the week of national holidays! After doing a special for Canada and releasing the most badass USCA unit for the United States, it is only fitting that I would breach my ship of the week schedule to celebrate the Independence Day of the most influential founding members of the Bolivarian Commonwealth : Venezuela.

So here it is, 10 weeks early, the AHC-422 Chavez Supercarrier, happy 198th! :

This week's Ship of the Week is also a Bolivarian Commonwealth capital ship. Albeit a much smaller one.

Hey, I didn´t know that your game played in a "2D fashion"! Is this just one mode in the final game?

Very nice video! :D

Yes it's totally a classsic shmup. The video is one of the 3 different shmup modes in the game. The others being top-down (or vertical) and depth. The latter one is the most "3d" of them, but it's still a throwback to classics like Afterburner. Glad you like the video! More to come...

Hey Christian,

I must admit that after initially seeing your shots of space ships, I never really "got" what it was you were going for here, but having seen your video, I now get it
And it looks like really good fun! Seriously, I love scrolling shoot em ups and I'm loving the whole 3D motion effects with the non-linear camera track and the camera wobbles when hit.

The best of luck and I look forward to more updates :)

If you weren't one of the lucky few to try the TotUSCA early demo, you really missed out on a lot of awe - this project totally rocks! :D
It's the whole thing, really. Kudos :)

Thanks guys! Particularly @jacmoe, I should pay you for all the good you say! Glad you guys like the clip, there are more of them coming! @Spannerman, yeah, really aiming for something cinematic, something you can "feel". Future clips will showcase that even more I hope!

Note : I just realised that in the credits portion at the end of the clip I've forgotten to add the following : "shaders by PIERRE MORCELLO" Shame on me SHAME SHAME SHAME! :( I kinda threw this together this morning and forgot. Future clips will have it.

Hehe, coming back here, I realise the "Yeah, me too" comment makes no sense at all.

That's because I accidently was on page 1, not this one, and was agreeing with spacegaier's comment:
Hey, I like this one!!! Looks really neat...
... in reference to the "The Govener" USCA AGDD 1000. Sorry about that non-sequitur.

Edit: Just checked the video. I didn't realise it was a side scrolling shooter. Looks really good! :)

As hinted last week, this week there is no ship of the week, but a screenshot instead! A few ships remain to be showcased as ships of the week, but they will be spread out until release. During which time screenshots will be shown instead. Enjoy!

That last one looks suspiciously like a Dreadnaught -- has Martin-Pegg been peeking into Rendili StarDrive's top-secret design archives again? :P

(OK, I just painted "nerd" all over my face with that one...)
Do you need help? What have you tried?

Yeah, no matter what you do it's going to get associated with something else. I know when Babylon 5 came up with the Starfuries people said it was copying the X-Wings. So it had wings in X, but the design was still very different. Maybe it's because I've seen both the Dreadnought in XvT and my own Long Arm design at every possible angle, but I can tell you they look little alike. Not that I'm pretending my designs feel totally original or fresh. Unfortunately in the spaceship genre, in order to look original often the only way to go is the organic-look and as-complex-as-possible. Otherwise it'll look like something that's already been done. I think it's the nature of the beast. In real life jetfighter and vehicular designs tend to go towards the simpler forms. You look at recent fighters like the F-22 or the S-47, and they are very elegant yet simple in form. And many feel copied from one-another. Is the S-47 not a rip of the X-29 at first glance? Are the Sabre and Mig-15 not clones of one-another? All I can say is that I started each design on a blank slate and build them from the ground up without a single reference used. My mind being one that has consumed science fiction spacecrafts for the better part of the last 30 years, of course stuff I've seen will sweat through the pores :-)

Thanks for the comments! Cheers!
