SteamPunk Legends

Post by Gucman »

Hi.
Me and my friends have just finished our new game based on Ogre. It's about to be released by GFI in Russia. I can't post any screenshots or movies here now but I can give you the link to the ad page held by GFI:
http://www.russobit-m.ru/catalogue/item/steam_slug/
There are screenshots on the right and one movie.
It's tpp action shooter. Its kept in steampunk reality where people build great steam-machines. As there is lack of electronics they search for some way to produce some kind of artificial intelligence that could steer this machines. Finally they discover how to attach human brain to the steam-machine and keep it alive outside human body. But machines with human brains inside start the rebel one day. You are Evan McRyan - mercenary hired to stop the steam-machines rebel.
The game is based on Shoggoth and PhysX. We have do a lot of work to improve the code we made for G.B.R. Well it was rewritten almost entirely. The game offers many nice visual effects:
- parallax mapping (all grounds, some walls)
- normalmapping (everything that doesn't use parallax mapping ;) )
- lots of particle effects (smoke, steam, fire, dust)
- postprocess:
= Tonning
= Bloom
= Depth of Field (visible on the first picture)
= Hot Air (the hot air distorts the objects behind - not visible on the pictures - you can see it best on the movie when McRyan shots with rocket launcher to the airship).

In normal circumstances I find too much HDR/Bloom a cliché, but not in this case. It fits the mood perfectly.
Looks like you've made a unique game here - kudos! :)

And you've got wrinkled air as well .. :D

How come you can't display some of those screenshots in this thread?

I can't post images/movies anywhere till the game will be finally released in Russia (in two/three weeks). I am bound by the agreement with the publisher :(. I'll post some larger images asap.

We are working over releasing the game in other countries than Russia. But it will take some time and I do not know any definite dates.

Hey it rocks!

Proficient use of smoke and fire particles, as well as lighting, animation, and I love the 3rd person camera, which makes the games so less boring comparing to fp.

I like it!!!

Thats a really nice looking game!!

I have a question about it though, since the game is built using Ogre 3D, witch is GPL lincenced, doesn't the game need to be open-source??

I am starting a project for a game also using Ogre and I am still very confused about the legal stuff... ???

Thanks in advance!!

Great work!!!! Cheers!!

No, Ogre is LGPL, so you only need to release changes made to Ogre itself.

I tried the Demo.

THe graphics looks nice.

But, what do you want to archive with the gameplay?
-AI is not working
-the main character runs like a static figure
-camera handling is worse
-plain dumb shooter

Sorry but the gameplay is form the 80's.

Invest more time and skill into Gameplay than into graphics!!!!!!

Maybe he wants to get into developing console games?

I only watched the video, but the character animation and action-camera look fine. I have seen much worse. I am not sure what you are looking for in a shooter. They never offer much more game play than shooting and dodging. If the camera is stiff, then all I ask is... does the enemy ever appear behind you? That is by design in many games that want to push you to keep moving forward in order to keep the action feel.

I think the game looks really nice and polished. Judging by the video, the game play does not look that bad either.
