Hello!

As a new member of the OpenSpace 3D team, I'm glad to announce the release of OpenSpace 3D 0.2.1!

This version add rendering support for most of web browsers (IE, Gecko's engine based and Opera), Drag and Drop support inside the editor, and lots of optimisations.
Image
OpenSpace player rendering in FireFox!

I take the opportunity of this post to explain you a little more the concepts behind this real time Editor.
We choose to integrate Ogre in a language named Scol, an interpreted language which programs runs on a virtual machine.

We are currently maintaining and make evolving this language, notably by upgrading the existing Scol OpenGL renderer to Ogre (the SO3Engine).
The mains advantages of this language are a network oriented design (network capabilities are fully integrated in, and transparent for the developer), a simple syntax, and greats evolving capabilities (new data-types and functions can be defined by C++ plug-ins).

The entire OpenSpace 3D platform is developed in Scol, using the SO3Engine Scol plug-in. In fact, you can create a 3D program with Scol only, however, the OpenSpace 3D is here to add an abstraction level between Scol programming and users (we want our technology to be accessible for non-developers users).
If you want more informations, check the wikipedia page for Scol (it's in french, so use google translate, i'll have to translate this when i'll get time), or the Scol Community page.

For downloading and more informations about Openspace 3D, check http://www.openspace3d.com, don't hesitate to suscribe for the newsletter to keep yourself informed about new releases!

Just a little more screenshot from our artist work-in-progress:

Cheers!

Hi,

As i'm a little bit tired (there was cool bands at the World Music Day yesterday night :) ), i'll detail the new OpenSpace 3D release with most of the content of the blog post...

So, here the news:
We have done a huge work on HCI (or Human-Computer Interactions) interfaces. Now you can easily manage the well known Joypad (by the way, Wii Mote was already supported), plus a bunch of less known interfaces, like the Text to Speech generation, Voice Recognition, and the innovative brain-computer interface NeuroSky Mindset headset.

And, as usual, all of those news functionalities are easily usable in your applications without coding, thanks to OpenSpace3D’s PlugIT system.

On the visual side, we are now supporting Ogre’s particles scripts (work is in progress to make a particle editor available), and you can also render the scene in wired mode. We also added a tool-bar that let you test an animation or a particle system within the editor interface.

Furthermore, the editor now allows panel resizing, multi-selection on PlugITs, and much more !

And last but not least, we have greatly optimized the OpenSpace3D object management system (scene loading time, physics, etc. are improved).
The ritual screenshot , presenting our new mascot, Andy (futur guest star of a mini-game demo, wip), and the particles integration:
Image

We have updated our online demos, so check check Kid Kitchen (a serious game on home safety), Car Showroom (if you got a microphone, you can now change colors by voice!) and a Virtual Tour.

Bye, and do not hesitate leave us your impression about the platform, it'll help us to improve it!

Hi,

In fact, this is not a modeler, so you have to use one (3DS, Blender, etc...) if you want to create your own graphic content (or download some). And 3DSMax renders precalc images, our tool is for real-time, it's not exactly the same target. The big advantage of OpenSpace3D is that you can edit your real time scene easily, and add custom interaction without programming neither scripting. For instance, if i have an architectural virtual tour, it's very easy for me to add auto-rotating doors (when the camera approach it), or to integrate flash video (no programming too!).
Thanks for your interest, and i whish you'll like it :D!

Re: OpenSpace3D version 0.2.3a

Post by Nodrev »

Hello,

Here comes the new version.

We added a "standalone" export, updating many PlugIts, and some minors bugs corrections (node animation importer).
We also completely changed our website, check it out (any remarks or corrections are welcome, as English is not our natural language!).

A word on a little application made with OpenSpace3D, and using the NeuroSky Mindset (a "brain interface" headset), that is released with this version:
Image

The gameplay of this demo is to "concentrate" to fire on the candle, and then switching your mind to a "meditation" state to avoid it to switch of.

Cheers!

OpenSpace3D release 0.2.5

Post by Nodrev »

Hi, I'm glad to announce the new version of OpenSpace3D, including the new features we had presented at "Laval Virtual", where I had the joy to meet MadMarx in the "non virtual life"
Here the content of our newsletter explaining what's new:

This version contains the news features that we had showed at the Laval Virtual exhibition, which took place from 6 to 10 april 2011, the most noticeable feature being the kinect integration.
The OpenSpace3D team like to thank all visitors that came to visit us, the K’AndyNect contest players (whose winner, named Laurent ENGELS, won a Kinect!), and the organizers of Laval Virtual 2011.
Image

KINECT INTEGRATION
The Microsoft device is now supported by OpenSpace3D, allowing you to create an application using it in a few clicks!
In order to keep the OpenSpace3D installation setup lightweight, there’s a separate package to manage Kinect, which can be downloaded here.
The installation of all the software that are necessary to make the Kinect run on PC being slightly complicated, our team took care to provide you a friendly user installer for Kinect.
As usual, you will found some examples showing this new feature in action, the first showing how to animate a character that will mimic your movements, the second one allowing you to manipulate a 3D object with the movement of your arms, and last but not least, the K’AndyNect game showed at Laval Virtual (all those demos are in “demos/kinectdemo” directory).

AUGMENTED REALITY
Our vision is to offer more and more features that allow our users to integrate some virtual reality functionalities in their applications, we added two new Augmented Reality oriented plugIts.
The ARCapture plugIt captures a video stream from a webcam, and detects markers on the resulting image. Note that the Kinect can be use as capture device for the AR.
The ARMarker plugIt permits to get the 3D position of a marker, that can be used to blend the captured video with 3D elements.
Another sample is provided, you can find it on the “examples\basics\ar_piano” directory (you will have to print the “ar_piano.pdf” document first).

IMPORTING SKETCHUP MODELS
A new Sketchup plugin is available on the support page, which allows you to import easily any Sketchup 3D model in OpenSpace3D. <edit>can also be found here too, thanks to Arkeon: http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 75#p427231</edit>
A video tutorial hosted on the OpenSpace3D Youtube channel explain how to install it, and how to use it to import your own 3D content.
As Sketchup has a huge 3D models database, we hope that you will find this plugin useful to make your 3D scenes.

NEW FEATURES
Looking at the plugIt editor, you will certainly remark the emergence of colours, that allow to associate visually each plugIt instance to his parent category (input/object/etc.).
Furthemore, the 3D engine now supports pose animations. Two new plugIts, using this functionnality, were added. They are the “animation LipSync” plugIt (to synchronise a character’s lips with a speech for example) and the “pose animation blender” plugIt (poses interpolations). A new sample showing those two plugIts in action can be found in the “examples/basics/lip_sync” directory.
Finally, some bug correction were done, mainly due to the Ogre 1.8 conversion (it is now possible to use the anti-aliasing in directX render mode).

That's all folks!

OpenSpace3D release 0.2.6

Post by Nodrev »

Hello,

This version adds a cinematics editor, which permits to manipulate and combine animations available in the scene in a global "cinematic" animation.
This new "cinematic" animation type can be used in existing animation plugIts as does any other animation:
Image

As we are talking about plugIts, we added new ones whose handles video capture (using a standard webcam, or the Kinect) and motion detection.
And of course, as usual, optimizations and small bug corrections (samples are now installed in user's document directory).
We also updated the sketchup exporter, correcting some nasty bugs in some case that were involving sketchup's "groups" and "components".

Not only does it have a great distribution platform (the web browser is great for distributing creations widely among the public),
i also add great editors that encompass lots of Ogre functionality.
The fact that it's open source makes it even more amazing. This might really help lift some barriers for artists and make them use ogre to the fullest.
