[unofficial] New Godot-focused Asset Store is online!

Post by Filip Godot »

Hello everyone.

We are announcing the grand opening of the Godot Marketplace!

If you are a game developer or develop 3d applications, you may have heard of Godot. Godot is a game engine like Unity or Unreal - but it is open source.
So far it lacked a commercial Asset Store to provide a platform for complex or time consuming assets.

This changes today! Some of the revenue will be donated to the Godot project to support them and the development of the engine.
To celebrate the opening we are offering you 5 purchases from the vendor “VisCircle” for free!
Coupon Code: GDMPCELEBRATION (valid until 16th of March 2020)

Hi!

I'm sure you mean well and your intentions are good.
But the way it is worded, the logo being used, and the name of the website makes it look like it's officially owned or endorsed by Godot, which is not.

As a fellow Open Source Project we cannot endorse a website that could hurt our peer. Godot is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy, a non-profit organization, and as such it cannot have an official for-profit marketplace.

To respect your free speech we did not censor your link nor your post, but made it clear it's unofficial and we removed the clickable link so users have to manually type it, and our website isn't used to boost SEOs.

Once your website makes more clear that it is not affiliated with Godot nor Conservancy (at the very least it cannot use Godot's logo, that you're not affiliated with Godot should be in the FAQ) and we're given the OK from the Godot project we'll be happy to keep your posts with clickable links.

Just to be clear: You can have a for-profit marketplace focused on Godot that donates some of its earnings to Godot. But it's not ok to make it look like it's oficial. At the time of writing, it's confusing.
