Google Summer of Code will be on for 2009

Post by sinbad »

Google have officially announced that Google Summer of Code will be returning in 2009! While the application process doesn't start for a few weeks yet, if you're interested in participating this year, now is the time to start thinking about it, joining the communities involved, and thinking about what you might want to do. Every year we find that potential students who have already joined, actively participated, and ideally contributed to the community before the Summer of Code application process begins are far more likely to make good applications. So, if you think you'd like to apply to OGRE for 2009, now is the time to get involved in the community.

Important: despite the fact that OGRE has participated in GSOC for the last 3 years, there is no guarantee that we will be picked to participate in 2009, as there will be fewer participating organisations in 2009 compared to 2008.

The main summer of code page was updated for 2009.
Students - if you want a chance of being a part of this project this summer - start to get involved with the forum, compile the code on your computer, submit patches and such. If this project will be a part of the soc we will prefer students that are involved with OGRE before the the soc starts.

Hello!
I have an question about participating with Ogre related project. Current i'm starting developing plugins for Ogitor.
Is it possible to participate with this Ogitor plugins development project? Or it is not truly Ogre project?

@zintus: Our first choice are projects that are "core OGRE", our aim is to get students involved with the OGRE community and add new forces to the coding that will be a part of our community for long after the summer.
The summer should only be the starting point and not the goal.
You can suggest any OGRE related idea - but it is hard for me to imagine that a plugin for Ogitor will be selected.
Personally I don't see myself mentoring anything that will not be merged into the trunk in the end.
We (and other projects) had a bad experience with students disappearing after the summer is over and we prefer students improving or adding to the base code then adding a new tool that will have a big chance of becoming an orphan.

Hello, Ogre team. I have quite enjoyed working with OGRE in the past, and am very interested in assisting in its development through GSoC. I am currently studying computer science at the University of Washington with an emphasis on 3d simulation, and have had a bit of experience with OGRE and OpenGL.

I will be looking around on the forum for ideas on features to suggest for GSoC, but In the mean time, feel free to note my interest!

-Jon
