Ogre at Dare Protoplay [Edinburgh Fringe Festival]

Post by HerrCron »

Hey All

I'm part of this years Dare to be Digital, a ten week competition for 12 teams of up to five students to design a fully functioning video game prototype.
At the end of 10 weeks, all the teams will gather at Dare Protoplay to showcase their work and be judged by industry experts.

This year three projects are using Ogre as part of their prototype
  • "Evolution of man" an RTS set in the stone age by team Phoenix.
"ClimbActic" a 3D cooperative platform game by team Carebox.
"Ragnarawk" a Rhythmic RPG Adventure using the Guitar Hero Controller by team Voodoo Boogie.
"Forgotten souls" a First person survival game by team Emergence Games.
This years Protoplay is being held at Our Dynamic Earth as part of this years edinburgh fringe festival over three days, the 12th, 13th and 14th of August.
It's a free event so anyone who wants to pop by and take a look at what has been achieved with Ogre in 10 weeks is more than welcome.

Cheers,
HerrCron

p.s i can't speak for the other teams, but we'll be putting a thread in showcase some point soon, just to show off.

Edit: I forgot one... oops

Very cool. I've pimped this on our front page because I love the Edinburgh Fringe and I'm very interested in OGRE events in the UK. Good luck!

HerrCon made a wee 'mistake' in the info just there.

You seemed to have missed out Carebox's 'Climb Actic'.
Its a platformer and puzzle co-op game that uses physics and OGRE.

I'm on the Evolution of Man team, and the guys from india and I (scottish student ambassador) just wanna say thanks for making OGRE as without it we wouldn't have learned as much and got anywhere near a game in the end. :D

Btw, theres pictures of us on the dare to be digital website but i thought it might be cool to take a pic of the teams using OGRE...

Indeed. Pottej is using NxOgre and Ogre to create a pretty awesome 2D/3D platformer/puzzle game. He's posted a video here. I'm sure he won't mind me passing the link on.

But I think it's fantastic for these games competitions to exist in the UK, and how many are using Ogre. :D

We're using nxOgre also, will put the vids/pics soon on the nxOgre bit.

Also, what are the arrangements to put projects on the featured projects area. Not boasting or anything but y'know....

Thanks for the pimping of ClimbActic guys! We'll have a new teaser trailer up soon.

I strongly encourage anyone who finds themselves near Edinburgh for the festival to come and pay us a visit (and hopefully a vote too!).

All of the games this year look amazing (obviously the OGRE powered ones are superior though ;) ) so it'll be totally worth it.

Hey cheers, that video was just meant as a physics demo... our proper trailer has just been uploaded here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SS_8VIPGJsY

We've been spending more time coding than video editing so its not the most professional thing in the world, but I hope you get the idea!

Some other teams are putting up videos now, hopefully they'll link here too because they all look pretty cool.

Hehe, thanks HerrCron.
So, at what time does it start ? I just realised it is just close to my flat :)

Any of you from Abertay Dundee uni ?
I just applied for an MSc in game development there, with no hope at all, don't have a first class degree, I am from Napier and it's too late anyway :( but we never know, maybe they still have a chair somewhere for me.
But I would like to hear about this Msc, does it worst it, is it difficult ?
is it more theoritical like most of studies or technical ?
Well if anyone did it can you tell me what you think about it in general? :)

Well, they offered me a place to study at Abertay for the Msc computer games technology !
Now I hesitate :?
I have the choice between this Msc and the one at Heriot Watt in Artificial Intelligence.
Could someone give me advice ?
I really don't know which one to choose.
Naturally I would love the one in computer games but I am afraid about how employers will look at it especially if I can't find a job in the video game industry and that I have to look for a job in a more "general" software development.
Also, artificial intelligence is really interresting and might offer more job perspective ?
What would you choose ? :(

Really depends what you want to specialise in. I can only really offer advice in the BSc Games Tech course as that was the one i did. Course was great, lots of scope to do what you want and as i understand it the MSc is a condensed version of that :-) But in the end it's completely up to yourself, i believe our BSc only had one module in AI so i can't really comment on if you'll get taught too much in the MSc.

Just throwing in my experience ^_^

Thanks Harsayis !

I finally chose the Msc in Abertay!
But now I have to find urgently a cheap room in a flatshare, if you know anyone looking for a flatmate...let me know !

I must have had a quick chat with you during dare to be digital while your team was presenting your amazing Ragnarawk!
What are you all doing now ? continuing the game ?
