For me one of the most impressive displays of Amiga's prowess is the 9 Fingers demo.
Runs on an OCS Amiga with meager 7MHz and 1MB of RAM. Still gives me goose bumps. :) Oh, yes and good soundtrack.

The Amiga was great for video too, it's graphics operated at either Pal or NTSC frequencies, complete with interlace, and you could output to either composite or even RF, as well as RGB for clearer video. It was a popular, cheap way of doing overlays and credits with video work.

And it had HAM mode, allowing 12 bit colour graphics and animation. Sure, you got some weird fringing, but that was half the fun.

Yes I was in total amazement why anyone EVER had a PC back then. They were WAY more expensive and utterly horrible in every aspect compared to an Amiga. Same goes for Macs, they were totally worthless. It's insane how they both managed to be so successful. Proves that marketing and money can convince people to buy any old shit for 10 times the cost. Depressing really :D

Uh oh, now look what you've done, you've given ex-Amigans a feeble excuse to start waxing lyrical about the 'good ol days' and how 'the world was robbed! We'd be 10 years further by now!'

Haha, same here. Either Pong or Space Invaders. The former was one of those lounge table versions at a Chinese restaurant nearby where I lived and Space Invaders I played for the first time at some Spanish road restaurant while we were on holiday.

My first favourite was Atari's Star Wars vector graphics arcade machine.

My dad did funnily enough; He used to get the sheets of music to Jean-Michel Jarre and copy them into OctoMed and change them around. :D

I think we need a dedicated "I love the Amiga" thread, as there are secret Amigans everywhere it seems. :)

I make DnB-style music with Renoise (a tracker too) once in a while. I'm a Venetian Snares fan, and somewhere I read he used to use OctaMED on the Amiga, that's how I heard about it.

Yeah, actually I'm 'Vectrex' here, but I use Octamed elsewhere. I used octamed on the Amiga for years. These days I use Buzz which is basically a more powerful version of it (not as fun as octamed though :) )
Yeah quite a few of VS style musos use trackers because they're so much better at beat and sample chop assembling.

Cool, you should try Renoise. It's a great modern tracker, with all new stuff like Vsts and stuff, and VS uses it for his current work. It runs on Linux too natively. :)

Tried it, it's very nice, but once you go modular you can't go back ;)

Pong, on the Telstar:

First favorite: toss-up between Blue Max and Bruce Lee on my Atari 800XL, and B-17 Bomber on the IntelliVision:

Depends on whether or not the Amiga had a Video Toaster or not...in which case, a lot of those movies you watched in the 00s were made using one (many, really) ;)
The Toaster was released as a commercial product in October 1990 for the Commodore Amiga 2000 computer system, taking advantage of the video-friendly aspects of that system's hardware to deliver the product at an unusually low cost ($1499).

Oh I know they made loads of money for everyone. That doesn't mean they were *good* ;) It's all marketing, money and lock in, they simply managed to get major pieces of software for business and graphic design established on them before the others. More professional business stuff like printers etc worked and the businesses were run well, unlike Commodore which couldn't sell $100 notes for $10. It's like VHS vs BETA. BETA was much technically superior but they got people using VHS first (porn ;) )

The reason for that was that VHS was open (and therefore free to use) while Beta cost money -- porn is for making money, so no point in spending more than you need to ;) (especially when that same "open" nature made the VHS hardware cheap too).

In the PC case, it was the same then as it is now -- if it weren't for Microsoft writing software that people wanted, for that platform, it would have gone nowhere too. It was more synchronicity than anything else...

I really can't remember what the first game I ever played was, probably something on my dad's Macintosh Classic II. There were a whole bunch of games -- Missile Command, Asteroids and Battlezone among them. My first favourite game was without a doubt Sonic the Hedgehog for the Master System. My friend also had a Commador 64 which I played many of my first games on.

I'm sure my resume looks very modern to of you old guys :), but just think, there are kids out there today whose first experience of a computer game will be (or rather, was) Halo 3 on the XBox 360

My first computer game was Wizardry-1 and I've played every installment of that series.
My first arcade game was Space Wars, I loved the hell out of that game for some reason.

First game ever for me was Frogger, on a friends BBC Acorn Electron. We could never figure out why when it loaded, it counted from 0-9 and then for some strange reason A-F and then 10 and so on up to FF.

My first favourite game would be Wolfenstien3d. I still play it every now and again, in a DosBox under Linux it runs great. I still occasionally jump in my seat when I run around a corner into a guard.

Spent a lot of time playing Alex the kid on SEGA too. :)

Our first hard-drive was a 200mb one, that fitted inside the A1200. If I remember correctly it was a birthday present. My dad partitioned it into four, and I was allowed a generous 100 megs. I even managed to install Workbench on two of the partitions so; We could both have our own OS/Desktop stuff without interfering with each other. Playing Monkey Island 2 on the hard-drive for the first time was pretty awesome, no more swapping 12 discs to play!

Now I have two hard drives each 5,000 times bigger than that!
Lol i would have loved to have had a 200mb drive as my first, but i was stuck with a 20mb drive and 13mhz cpu ( wooo gotta love those 286's ).

But the game i played first was WWF Wrestlemania an all around classic in my opinion

Cool thread. Its kinda hard to remember the first game I played, but I'm pretty sure it was on the Commodore64. I want to say 'International Karate', thats at least the oldest game I recall playing. I also remember they had this Gauntlet type game on the C64 that was really cool. It was an overhead dungeon adventure game. There were like 4 characters, a warrior, a wizard, a magic girl, etc. The graphics were like Zelda. You would go through the level and fight ghosts and demons, open chests, etc. and then warp to another level. Anyone remember the name of this game?

Yep cool thread.
I think it was probably Jungle Hunt on the Atari 2600 or maybe another game on my first computer an Amstrad CPC, can't remind clearly... :(
