Helix is indeed getting a bit boring. If you can watch defiance it is good. One show which shouldn't have been axed was "The 4400".

I instantly recognized Farragut from Helix as Jordan Collier from The 4400. 4400 had its weird and over-the-top moments (Isabelle growing up 20 years overnight, anyone?!?!), but they were outshined by what it did right. I just watched 6-7-8 of Helix and I will continue to watch, but I don't get the impression of a cohesive story yet. There's too many plot elements floating around willy-nilly instead of in orbit of a solid nucleus, but I guess that's what happens when you hold information back and try to play the mystery/intrigue card. It could be pretty great if it starts to crystallize.

I just remembered Under The Dome as well. It was decent, but failed to hook me. It got renewed for another season, so I guess we have that and Falling Skies to look forward to in summer of this year.

I'll give Defiance a shot :)

I forgot about "Under The Dome" I could never make my mind up with that show. Guess I will watch the second season to see how it goes.

That reminded me as well American Horror Story season 1 was quite good 2 was ok 3 I didn't finish watching yet

Ha, that was my thought too. Looks more like "Dawson's Creek-but-with-aliens". In any case, it's purely incidental that they're aliens, just a flimsy premise for conflict.

Hahaha yeah, at least they aren't even trying to deny that it's a romeo and juliet story ("From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life"). Also the scifi-alien-as-allegory-for-racial-or-class-struggle is pretty done to death, but whatever. Teenagers don't know that :lol:

One thing that's annoying about working in a college is that I end up using a lot of different computers. Well, they are all the same kind, the problem is every time I sit at a new computer I need to change it's settings. I hate using a computer that has hide extensions enabled in the folder options, as well as some other stuff I like to change (no taskbar grouping, etc).

I just found out today that I can do it all from a powershell script! Just run the script from my network drive and all my settings are applied.
But there's a problem. By default, powershell (the uber dos prompt admin tool thing in windows) can't run powershell scripts. Scripts are restricted. I need to enable script running. But the command to enable script running requires admin permissions, which I don't have. :(
I can manually type the 5 or so lines of the script into powershell and they work fine, no permissions needed. I just can't run from a file.

Every few months I am radically interrupted by events and bullshit that prevent me from working on my damn projects. That is so frustrating I'm considering becoming hobo and using macdonalds wifi to live. :evil: ARRRGH

Time for some ARGH!

I've got a Kinect 2 for PC currently shipping from melbourne to brisbane. I should have it on friday.
The ARGH is caused by my discovery that the Kinect 2 sdk is windows 8 only. I can't even install it on my main dev pc (windows 7).
DAMN YOU MICROSOFT!

The college I work at (where I was going to use the Kinect 2) has hundreds of computers running windows 7. That's part of a national policy from our owners, I can't change OS. There's no windows 8 there. My main dev pc at home and laptop are windows 7 too.
The only windows 8 I have is my surface pro 2. While it's great for portable dev (runs visual studio damn fast), I don't want it as the only hardware that can run the Kinect and it's sdk.

So I guess any Kinect 2 programming I want to do must be done on a tablet.

It's not just running the Kinect 2 that needs win 8, the sdk won't install on win 7 so I can't cross compile.

Thanks a ****ing lot MS. I've been happy with you recently, until this.

That's Microsoft for you. I'm still holding out hope that DirectX12 will run on Windows 7, but the way things are going I'd put money that it will be Windows 9 only. Arrrgh!!!

Yep, DX12 will be Win 8 or Win 9 only. I guarantee it.

At least Visual Studio hasn't gone win 8 only (yet). But I wouldn't be surprised if 2014 brings that.

I expect dx12 to be windows 9 only I will be suprised if 8 gets it. The reason I think this is DX12 is supposed to bring a log of speed enhancments so its a way to push people (gamers) to update windows. If windows 8 does get DX12 it will be after windows 9 release.

I am expecting windows 9 next year they are supposed to be on a yearly cycle with releases of the OS.

I had an urge to take a look at OpenMW, to play around with adding Oculus support. Now that would be fun.
I went to the web site and checked the FAQ.
Oh for ****S sake, another GPL game.
Oculus sdk is not GPL compatible.

No oculus for OpenMW then. If they had of chosen a good license like MIT or BSD, no problem.

I could try to work around it (maybe have the oculus sdk send tracking data via a network connection to the game or something), but why bother? Choosing GPL for a game means you don't want people to have the freedom to choose non GPL components (Oculus Rift, Havok, PhysX, Fmod, etc).

Kind of an ARGH!
I'm sitting here with my Kinect 2 beside me, still in the box. But I'm in the middle of a C++ exam and I don't have a knife to quietly open the package and I can't go to the staff kitchen (10m away) because I can't leave the room unsupervised.

I just need to sit here and watch students writing code...

After the class we got the kinect 2 running. the demos run ok on my surface pro 2 (my only win 8 system), but there was some lag (hopefully the tablet, not the kinect itself).
The 3d view was so much better than the kinect 360, vastly better depth channel. Skeleton tracking handled thumbs as joints. But it needs work, one student stood with his legs together and the kinect thought he had one leg raised and shaking. Generally good though.
The sdk doesn't have many demos yet, and no fusion yet (the main bit i want).

I'd play with coding for it tonight, but i have a maths lecture to prepare for tomorrow.

Ok, been tons of arghs, I just didn't want to make them public. :) Seems my life at the moment is a giant continuous ARGH.

Anyway...
I just started looking at the PrioVR (17 sensor motion capture suit for games, vr and mocap) sdk. The hardware is still being worked on, but the sdk is out.
Hmm, there's two licenses for the sdk: non commercial use and commercial use. The commercial use one may require a fee, depending on use. The non commercial one is GPL.
DAMN IT!
I guess I can't do non commercial demos of PrioVR with the Oculus Rift, since the rift's sdk is not GPL compatible.
The GPL doesn't even allow non commercial restrictions to be added. The GPL states:
If the Program as you received it, or any part of it, contains a notice stating that it is governed by this License along with a term that is a further restriction, you may remove that term.
They didn't modify the GPL, they just linked to the original and gave more restrictions.

I wish MIT or BSD was more popular. So many things I keep finding that I want to work with (like OpenMW, and a ton of open sourced games) but they went for GPL.

I'm still thankful to Sinbad for putting in the work required to change Ogre from LGPL (which isn't as bad) to MIT. So much nicer.

Oh that's so funny. I have been researching inertial mocap for the last few weeks. PrioVR is the next generation of YEI's 3 way sensors. And yeah the GPL part on their software was really weird. I guess some people feel really strongly about forced copyleft, I assume for purposes of source code reciprocity.

Also weird is how they would choose an open license at all for their studio software. For big names like Xsens, the studio software is a substantial portion of the cost of such systems. I guess when you're starting at the ground floor it's better to go open since you have almost no features to speak of.

And yeah I wish MIT and BSD were more prevalent. I've spent an entire career working almost exclusively with MIT and BSD licensed code. The one that annoys me even more than GPL is LGPL. Sure it's more permissive, but it makes even less sense somehow. Shared object yes, but static link no? Wtf?

Part of the motivation for developing the GPL was because Stallman ran into software that he couldn't modify or fix. The dynamic link restriction on the LGPL is so that they end user is free to use a modified version of the library.

Of course the GNU Foundation doesn't give a flying fig about commercial constraints that require static linking. Heck the whole v3 debacle was designed to thwart just that (commercial use on embedded devices). Funny how the GPL has fallen out of favor. At least with those that bother to try to understand what it says.
