Ogre is still the best FOSS graphics engine and dark_sylinc is doing wonders with Ogre 2.0. If he manages to make his vision a reality to the end Ogre should be one of the fastest rendering engines around with a material system as flexible as the ones from UE4 or Unity 8)

Ogre is clearly not as convenient for gamedev as UE4 is because of its limited scope, but this has been the case for a long time and again, some people prefer FOSS.

So what happened to Ogre is probably lack of free time from contributors, lack of convenience for end-users and discouraging posts like yours that point to the obvious.
Fortunately not everyone share your depressing attitude, I'm planning to contribute next year once I'm finished with my project loosely related to Ogre (Ogre will be the demonstrator for something that might be a world premiere and possibly a quite important advance, to be announced next month).

Maybe a new community poll like a few years ago would clarify if something actually changed in the community metrics? Like just comparing the count of actual users (who are not visible here but might get news from the website and twitter) would be very interesting.

Had a similar idea a few days ago. Will put that on my to-prepare-list :) .

i picked the most downloaded versions of ogre binaries( amongst vc9/10/11, mingw etc... )
this should give u some estimates info about trends and the amount of people/bots interested in OGRE

by coincidence or not ,the numbers sort of match the number of registered OGRE users....( at buttom of the page...http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/index.php)
so my guess is that once you're "hooked" on OGRE you don't switch...
but for new-bees( "where is the game editor?" ,"how can i make WOW style game?","fluffy bird cloners" sort of "developers" ) - different story....

Interesting blog post about collada, fbx and opengex: http://www.gamefromscratch.com/post/201 ... opers.aspx
It even quotes this thread. :)

That OpenEXR format seem very interesting. I also only discover OpenDDL in this thread so thanks for pointing all that guys.

EDIT:

frostbyte, these data are nice but very hard to interpret, which is why I think comparing the same community poll from previous years to today would be far more interesting and precise.

OpenEXR is a texture format used in the movie industry. Ogre has supported it for years.
OpenGEX is a 3d scene format (meshes, cameras, lights, bones, etc).

OpenEXR is really cool though. It was created by ILM and supports HDR images of 16 or 32 bit integer or float per channel, deep data (multiple samples at different depths per pixel), multiple compression modes (lossy and lossless), arbitrary number of channels (each with a different data type), multiple images within one file.
The OpenEXR sdk is BSD licensed.

You know, the bad thing is that I was working on an automated GUI download-build-and-install-Ogre tool, made in QT.
A 0.1 version of it was almost ready.
Then I lost all my data (it was the only and last time I ever worked without versioning...). And now I am too busy with our project and lectures that I just have no time for it - only if I wanted to spend all my remaining free time coding, too, which I don't ;)

If I ever find the time to do it again (ask me in a year or two), I would use Haxe + OpenFL/HaxeUi, though. Much better idea for such a tool, Haxe is just super easy and effective to code with.
Guys, I'm willing to create a such tool for noobs (like myself a year ago) as my project will be finished kind of soon so all suggestions/pointers on the issue are welcome. I'm pretty familiar with Flash workflow so Haxe + Flash UI could be an optimal choice for me, too.

Downloading and compiling the source has always been considered an advanced thing.

For the 'noobs' that just want to download and try Ogre, I have always found the prebuilt SDK's to be flawless. 8)

That is how I started with it in 2005. I had no idea about C++ whatsoever, yet I could still download the SDK, follow Tutorial 1 on the wiki and be impressed with myself with what I had just achieved. :D

I think more 'in your face' awesome screenshots on the front page would help. It is the front page that has been pretty stagnant for years.

That's how I've done it, too. Maybe I should better take a look at updating Ogre App Wizards for VS 2013 though I'm clueless about VS' internal tools.

there is a gallery...with four images...maybe presenting youtube videos from the showcase forum( no legal issues with that ) in that gallery would be more 2015 ...
it sound like you want OGRE to compete with unreal or unity5 games/demos ....mmmm.....that would be hard to do.....
OGRE is not much about PR and hype but more on being a good c++ rendering api....maybe it should stay that way...

off course that is pure PR and no sane person should think "hey, if i pay 19$ a month - i can do that.... "
never the less it seems to work for them...

Before you were happy outdoing the big middleware players for tool features/useability, now you are gonna compete with them on showcase visualizations. It's OK for Ogre to have the scope it has now, and to have limits. At a time when that scope expands, or those limits are pushed it is best to be realistic about it (IMHO).

Example: my daughter is a very bright person, and I am proud of her, but it's OK for her not to be the smartest kid in the entire world AND SUPER HERCULES STRONG TOO.

hey dude, i'm on your side... :)
there is a gallery...with four images...maybe presenting youtube videos from the showcase forum( no legal issues with that ) in that gallery would be more 2015 ...
what i try to say and even the funny guys at epic realize, is that fancy demos that cost xxx,xxx $$$ to produce has nothing to do with real life indie/mobile gaming world, where angry flappy fruit ninja bird that draws something wins the jackpot...
ogre can look great, so does native opengl( nvidia produced even more impressive demos than epic... ) it does'nt mean much...it realy is up to the cg artists...

however if i was more of an artist/game-dev than a programmer, i guess that the 20$ a month would probably save me 2000$ a month...not to mention time....programming/debuging or even searching and downloading the "right tools" takes lots of time/effort/money
what more - in my surprise it turns out some people don't know or care about programming - but still want to create games...
it's nice to have somebody taking care of that for you....i think it's worth the 20$...
i'm not sure if the guys who started heretic kingdom few years ago when ogre was a default choise would have done it again today using ogre...

EDIT: Oh, i forgot about the 5% stuff...damm this marketing tricks...

AHA! Gotcha there didn't we! Yes we did! See, that's the whole trick, as mentioned here way back when! That's right, ALL the images are there, just waiting for you to discover them (by scrolling down, past the area in the right-hand margin devoted to ad banners, that somehow don't agree with us showing more than say.. four images above the fold...)

Yes, you fell for it all righty

yes you've managed to fool me...
and what an amazing galery it was.... made me delete unity3d from my hard drive and call epic for my money back....

jokes aside( i'll try but i can't realy promise... )
this is what happens when you let c++/asm shader freaks hard-core guys run a web-site as a volenteer work...its just not very interesting i guess....
i my self find it soooo boring that i can't even make my-self learn how to handle tiki-wiki...so i can't realy blame anyone....
maybe rebuilding the website using webgl( emscripten ) version of ogre and some neural-network stuff can make someone actualy care about it....

that's me laughing at my own jokes --> <--

Fixed it for you.

Why not have the front page simply speak for itself and be a showcase in its own right?
