Render Text in 3d

I would like to render text in 3d space, for example a computer monitor or a writing on a wall. The text could change, so creating a texture seams to be the wrong way.

Looking how Gorilla renders text, one can see that it creates a rectangle for each character and maps uv coordinates to a texture with rendered fonts. Would this be the right way?

Or is there code or a common class that I have missed?
