Naming candidates for Ogre 2.3

Post by dark_sylinc »

The latest changes aren't big (nowhere as big as 2.0 -> 2.1 -> 2.2), but enough to warrant bumping 2.2 -> 2.3, particularly now that we have published a stable release of 2.2, thus users expect only very minor changes from 2.2.n -> 2.2.n+1

The github ticket explains the version bump in more detail.

The theme is Mythological Gods and Creatures

Possible Resources (not restrictive):
https://greekgodsandgoddesses.net/gods/
https://www.ducksters.com/history/ancie ... hology.php
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_G ... _goddesses
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Germanic_deities
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hindu_deities
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_p ... an_deities

Elements from active religions such as Christian, Islam and Hindu symbolism can apply, but we need to be more careful, as not to be disrespectful.

Champions, demigods can also be used.
We need to filter this list with the best candidates, so that the poll votes don't dillute too much.

The name must start with the letter D. As that is Ogre 2.3's codename.

The name should be ideally easy to type and remember. Some names like Dellingr or Dakshayani may sound really cool (at least as a westerner) but they can be very hard on our global userbase, unless you all disagree.
Names like 'Dionysus' sound cool but are prone to confusion (was the first an I or Y? or was it the second? Were both written with Y? was it Dionysus or Dionsyus?)

  • Dinlas

  • Deimos

  • Dione

  • Devi

  • Dharma

  • Diti

  • Durga

  • Dushara

  • Dai

Remember: We're culling the list now (or add new ones if proposed). Once we settle for 2-4 candidates, we will make a poll to select the winner.

What is this discrimination?! You totally forgot to link Roman deities! :D
Anyway, my favourites are: Devi and Dharma from your list; Devera and Diana from Roman list.

Dora

This divinity is worshiped nowadays by children all around the flat earth.
It is a widespread custom in young generations to wear clothes with her image imprinted on.
Also, she talks in everyone's language and teaches English for free to anyone listening to her wisdom.

She masters of all magical powers and can enter inside other dimensions just like the Portal Connected Zone Scenes Manager's demo.

Truly Dora will be the Ogre 2.3 Goddess.

Ok!!!

I see lots of good recommendations! I like them more than most of my initial suggestions.
Truly Dora will be the Ogre 2.3 Goddess.
Ok that was a funny one! I'll allow it!
Dragon
Drakon
I do love Drakon for sure, but we already had Ogre 1.2 'Dagon', thus the spelling is too close.
Daedalus - Greek Hero!
Oh my! How could I forget?

So, culling the list and based on new suggestions:
  • Daruma
  • Dalia
  • Daedalus
  • Devi
  • Dora
  • Dryad
  • Draugr
I'll probably want to cull this list down to 4-5. Does anyone want to speak in favour or against this list?

As a fan of the old Stargate series, Daedalus would have my vote.... Although I do like Demo-gorgon :)
