[solved] PhpBB3 Please!

Post by jacmoe » Mon Oct 27, 2008 6:12 pm

I know it's going to be painfull, but I'd really like if the forum software was upgraded to PhpBB3.

I really hate it when I loose track of my read/unread posts when I log out.

As a moderator, I really need the new PhpBB3 feature:

[quote="PhpBB Doctor"] the feature that has most changed how I use phpbb.com is the “Read Trackingâ€

Another reason to upgrade is the finer grained permission/moderating features.

Speaking of lives Jacmoe. Where have you been for the last few months?

And I agree a phpBB upgrade would be welcome; As long as it doesn't break anything and only takes a Sunday afternoon to do.

Been moving from house to house too much. Four times in two years - that's shite. :x
Left me too knackered to do anything Ogre-wise. :(

Let's hope so! :)

It does look like it's easier to manage addons and upgrades in the new PhpBB.

That would be me; and betajaen was working on a 'Web 2.0' alternative.

It's not entirely finished, but I stopped since I knew sinbad wouldn't be upgrading anytime soon; he also had problems with exporting/importing the monstrous database. I'd be happy to continue if we show any possible signs of upgrading.

I think we all know the advantages of phpBB3 after my rambling about it in the other thread.

But unless sinbad can get the time, and successfully migrate without any problems, phpBB2 ain't shifting.

Whoops, didn't see that topic.

My reason for this feature request is because I really need to be able to actually moderate this forum.
The Ogre community is growing, and - unless I buy more RAM - my method is opening each and every new post since my last visit in a separate tab in Firefox is getting a bit unwieldy! :P

If, and only if, a PhpBB2 addon exsist which allows us to have a persistent read/unread feature, I'd be happy to stay with version 2.

/* edit */

Yes, I am aware of Sinbads views on these matters, but now I think an upgrade is justifiable. :!:

'nuff said.

every new post since my last visit in a separate tab in Firefox is getting a bit unwieldy!
That's what I do - I open most of them in a new tab, scan through them, and close each once I'm done. It only takes a couple of minutes each day. :P
unless I buy more RAM
That's probably because you have months worth of 'new posts' to read!

An upgrade is certainly justifiable, but mainly in the sense that phpBB3 is like a fortress against spammers.

It will happen again, believe me!
Right now there seem to be less Ogre forum activity than 'usual' - well, nothing is 'usual' when it's about Ogre!
In busy periods, however, you really can't oversee what's happening.
It's crazy..! :)

I'm running a test upgrade to 3.0.4 on my test server right now. The main upgrade takes about a couple of hours, then regenerating the search index looks like it will take another 4-5 hours. Then there's a few settings to change.

However, it went much smoother than 3.0.0 - they've obviously fixed the upgrade process a bit. I'm thinking of doing it over the xmas period when things are quieter (both in my schedule, and in the community). I'll need to do a few more tests first though.

I decided to keep it simple with the theme, much like the current one it's based of a recoloured version of the default theme. I need to figure out where to put the shortcut buttons too.

I have no idea if I'll get time to do the add-ons forum though. I considered trying to merge them but there seems to be no good way to do that right now.

What do you mean by merging the main and the addons forum? Making one big out of them? I think it's rather good as it is, because otherwise the main forum would become too large!

I'd let it as it is right now. It's really good!

I also hoped for a second that updating to phpBB3 also meant to upgrade to PHP5, but (unfortunately  ) that is not needed...

Yeah - it's just the fact that you can multiply nest forums now and the 'post since last visit' has been replaced by a proper 'read' flag, so the size would be less of a problem. But, it's not really feasible right now.

Nope, and that's a good thing, since my server support contract is based on RHEL4 right now.

small request here, it may be just a matter of being used to, but would feel more comfortable if the author of a post is displayed on the left side =)

I like it. It's less cluttered.
It takes a while to get used to, though. :)
