Software/Windowless Render System

Post by DigitalGhost » Mon Dec 29, 2008 6:30 am

Hey all,

At the moment, the dedicated server requires an OpenGL or D3D render system to run. This means that it requires windows or X11. There is no way to run the dedicated server on a machine without a windowing system. The reason why the dedicated server needs a render system is because it needs skeletal animation so the server can do hit-detection & physics.

Is there any way to create a Render System that runs in software without the need for X11 or any windowing system and that also supports creating entities and skeletal animation?

Thanks,
DigitalGhost

Asked dozens of times, and the answer has not changed in years:

no.

You shouldn't be using a rendering engine for your animation on the server. Something like Havok, for example, does skeletal animation (and physics of course) and you are better off using that instead.

Do you need help? What have you tried?

You are always free to pick apart and pull out specific parts of Ogre. If you want, you can certainly pull Ogre's animation system out and use it stand-alone. This sort of dismantling and re-building is certainly allowed, possible, but not "supported." Ogre will always be geared as a rendering platform.

Or you could also write your own rendersystem that simply does nothing at all. :?:

Yeah the rendersystem exists some where deep in the forum called null rendersystem but it was written for 1.4.
