This is a web page request.

I think it is much convenient to have a c++ syntax highlighter inside tags.

I doubt we'd install a phpBB plugin, as we have an anti-mod rule.

However, there are a billion Javascript based C++ highlighters, that could be put into the theme if several arms were twisted and Jacmoe was held down. ;)

Problem is you would still need to mod the forums so the code tag renderes so the syntax highlighter will work

TBH phpBB should have a close look at WordPress now that has a very good add in system. Then again I think they may have improved phpBB in this version never admined this one extensivly

Syntax Highlighter is a pretty cool little Javascript library there, but I don't think you need to do too much modding of phpBB to get it working.

Just a Javascript onLoad function to parse all <code> tags would do it.

I've worked with SyntaxHighlighter, but I think Highlight.js would be a better option:

If we can teach it to colour code all code tags as C++ code, then we're pretty much done.
Only two or three lines in a template file. :wink:

Maybe throw in two links: highlight / plain - probably with highlighting off?

Comments should be green and preprocessor parts not gray, but aprt from that: Good!

At first, I thought everyone was mad, but then I had to CTRL+F5 before I could see it.

Glad Jacmoe got my hint at the style. Comments shouldn't been green though, green represents links on this website. Comments aren't links.

But then some sort of yellow/orange/brown mix. Green however is the common color for comments. And I think noone would assume green parts in the code area to be links anyway, so I can't follow your reasoning here ;) .

What gave you that idea? Gray is a perfectly common and sensible colour for comments :)
I agree that preprocessor defines should have a different colour, though.

Okay maybe I am just used to it ;). VisualStudio makes them green, my PHP Editor does and eclipse makes them blue. Gray however is directly associated in my brain with unused code such as #define guarded, so something I don't have to care about.

But I guess that depends on how important you see comments. I f you "don't care" much about them gray (= half invisible :P ) is fine, whereas I prefer them to be easily readable = strong color.

Not to put anymore on your plate, but Hilighter doesn't seem to understand comments properly.

Also; has it been installed on the addons?

It works on the code tag.
Will try and auto-detect language, but you can specify one of the following options:
  • bash
  • cs (C#)
  • cpp (C++)
  • cmake
  • dos
  • ini
  • lua
  • python
  • ruby
  • diff
  • html (XML)
If you don't want to highlight, use 'off':

I think it's fine as-is.
Would be silly to turn it off by default.
It's not only a perk to the posters, but also for the readers: with highlighting it's so much easier to read at a glance.
Simply because of the contrast.
If it was off by default, it wouldn't offer enough advantages to warrant the extra work in installing it. IMO. :wink:

The deciding factor was definitely that it makes it easier to spot things when hurriedly browsing the forums.
Anything which speeds up that process is worth it IMO. :)

I guess the question is what is posted more often - code or log files? The default should be set accordingly to reduce the total amount of work needed to manually choose the right one.

Seriously though. How hard is it to write a language parser for .log files? Seems fairly easy from a regex point of view. Although if it helps (.log) files are acceptable attachment types now, perhaps we should be encouraging people to attach them instead.
