Free Maya Video Tutorials

Post by Rixeh »

Well, I figured I can't just leave us Maya people in the dark while 3DS users get all the goodies. 8) Here's my attempt at making some training vids!

This 1st series will deal with how to rig, weight, and export a character with animations into Ogre. I've made it general enough that it works as a Maya training vid more than anything. If you don't know how to rig characters, I'll show you. ;)

Lesson 1 - Create Skeleton (216MB, ~34 Mins)
Lesson 2 - Weighting with Smooth Bind (199MB, 39 Mins)
Lesson 3 - Controllers (55MB, 16 Mins)
Lesson 4 - Exporting to Ogre (13MB, ~8 mins)

They are encoded with XVid. I'm hosting them on my site ATM, but with 15GB monthly bandwidth, I'll probably have to move them to BitTorrent. Links will update if they need to be.

Hope you like them!

*Edits: Finished all the vids, enjoy. :) *

Thanks joi, I know you use maya a fair bit too so rigging might not be new to ya, but maybe there's some hints people can pick up anyway. ;)

I checked them both out and I have to say good work.

One minor note that sort of bugged me is when you mirrored over the skeleton in the first video. You mention that it "unfortunately" reverses the joint orientations on the model's right side as if it were something to be corrected. This actually simplifies a lot of animation tasks down the line, so it's a good idea to leave them reversed. Other than that small annoyance, we were very pleased and I think novices could gain a lot from them so far.

Should've put in a disclaimer like "these techniques work for me, but there are tons of ways to do this stuff". ;) I've never found a use for the mirrored rotations, in fact I find em to be nothing but a pain when I start adding orient constraints. 8)

The download links are dead. Was there a torrent file created? I really need to look at those films please :)

Please make them availble again.

I've got some spare bandwidth if you'd like a mirror.

Hey Dr, that'd be sweet if you want to mirror these things. Ive got 15G/month on my webhost account, but I have to basically cut these files at ~14.5 so my email/website still works for the rest of the month. ;)

No, they're not down. They're of zero size.

Any word on Lesson 3 and 4? They sure would be useful...or if there is another miror for the 3 and 4th one that would rock as well :) ;)

That may be what vinhk was talking about, but the lesson two is also scrapped. I get a CRC error when I attempt to unpack it...so only video 1 is accessable ATM.

Sorry everyone. I don't know what happened to those files.
My ISP recently moved my domain to a different server, so perhaps
they got hosed in the move. I've submitted a support ticket to see
if they have a backup they can restore.

I don't have those files locally anymore. Does anyone else have them available?

Just my opinion, but I am not sure we should have a sticky for this anymore as new users might be looking for this; but it does not exist.

I can mirror 3 and 4 if you get me them. I only have 500mb of storage on my site, but 3 and 4 aren't that big. It wouldn't be any problem.

Also, if you do create a torrent (which I'd suggest one for each video, not as a collective group) I'd be more than happy to seed it.

Hopefully these videos get back up soon. I'd like to watch them all.

Hey everyone! Sorry about all this, I've been taking a long break from anything PCs and Animation so I didn't catch this earlier. I'm re-upping all 4 video .RARs right now (to the original links) so they should be available soon.

Hope they're still of use to everyone, I'm planning on getting back into the 3D scene again soon -- so maybe more videos will appear. ;)

Seeya all

*Edit* Feel free to BitTorrent/mirror them also. My limit is still 15Gigs, and when it gets close to 14.8 I shut it down so my Emails etc still work for the rest of the month. ;) *

Mirrored, I allocated 500 GB of bandwidth for it. It is with some other stuff but that only takes about 20GB a month of bandwidth so that leaves 480 for this :)

Lesson 1 - Create Skeleton (216MB, ~34 Mins)
Lesson 2 - Weighting with Smooth Bind (199MB, 39 Mins)
Lesson 3 - Controllers (55MB, 16 Mins)
Lesson 4 - Exporting to Ogre (13MB, ~8 mins)

I'll leave it on until I run out of disk space. But I am only using about 10 gigs out of ~60 so no worries there for a while :)
