Manually drawing a space skybox.

Hello, I'd like to draw a space-themed skybox but have no idea where to start. Are there any useful tools for that? ( except for an manipulation program of course). Are there any 3d programs that directly allow you to directly draw on it?
I guess I have to deform it somehow so that it looks good on the box, but what kind of deformations?
I've tried googling for it but the keywords I could think of only returned automatic generators and guides on how to put the skybox in the game world, but not how to actually draw them myself.
Does anyone know any good guides about drawing skyboxes?
