A good scoped game is something like Monkey Ball/Marble madness. It covers everything, nothing is too hard or takes too long and it's a cool game type. I get all my students to make one and they manage fine. You might want to consider C# with 'MOgre'. I have an unfinished guide on the MOgre wiki page (linked from the main ogre wiki) which starts you on a marble game.
