Destructable Characters!!??

Post by marlboro »

Hi, i was wondering if anyone has tackled or knows of a good source of information regarding the breaking up of a biped!

My goal is the create a biped with a set of animations - no problem i hear to say, well there is a problem my task in my uni project is to create a process where the character can be attacked and then limps removed, since im new to modelling and this is an individual project im kinda stuck, i've managed to create a character that has eight sections (head, arms, legs, upper torso and lower torso) and i can this to display correctly within ogre however the problem is when i add the animation to the scene all the parts break away and i loose all control over keeping them together, so any help would be gratefully received :)

Are the your bones connected to each other in the original character?
You can try disconnecting them only when your character gets hit.

You can use a mesh of the entire biped when playing animation and substitute it with the set of body parts as soon as it get fragged. You should have no problem in the substitution, because the bones can tell you the position where to put the separated body parts...

Of course this solution doesn't allow you to let your player continue running without an arm... Or without the head...

An easy way to achieved this is hiding submeshes (see API to know how to make subEntities invisibles) substituted with the "broken" ones... But you have some controls to do, because probably you don't want a player without arm, but with the hand still there moving regularly. Or you don't want your player to run without legs! :P

Everything depends on how realistic you want it and how much time do you have!
