New to exporting (3d max 7)

Post by hizdudeness »

Hey guys I'm new the the forum. I started in 3d max about 3 weeks ago. I've been reading the tutorials and teaching myself basic modeling skills.

I am trying to export to a format where I can move around in my enviroment in a "free look mode" or walk around like a FPS. I'm under the impression that ogre wond nessasarily do this, but getting my model to compile is a step in the right direction.

when i tried to export my models I got the following error.

-- Runtime Error : out of scripter memory -- use options to increase

I I'm not sure where in the options I'm supposed to adjust the memory. I'm running 2 gigs of ddr2 so I'm reletively sure i have enough for my simple model. Is it in the export options or somewhere in max. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

My msn and aim accounts are posted feel free to msg if its eisier to explain this way.

Thanks again for the help

Suggest you use the oFusion plugin instead (ofusion.inocentric.com) or you can try the work-in-progress plugin-based exporter I am developing: http://www.clashofsteel.net/xavier/OgreExporter.dle

Ok I have another quick question. I installed the plugin you sugested, and now when i start my 3d max i get the following scripting error.

-- Cannot assign read-only variable: ogreMaterial

Should i just restore my max back to default (use my windows restore point before I installed the original ogre exporter) or is there a way around this?

oFusion and the MaxScript exporter don't get along. Remove all the MaxScript stuff and oFusion will be fine. The plugin exporter I am working on is independent of both.

I dont know much about scripting (yet) like I said i'm still learning and there's alot fo suff to learn at once. If i want to work on scripting stuff am I still going to be able to? Does Ogre have a scripting utility with it? I looked at your download, but with the lack of experience I dont know how useful it will be for me.

I'm also trying to figure out how to get my model/map into a format that I can walk around with in a sort of FPS mode. Do you have any advise as to which direction I should start wondering in for something like that.
I'm not looking to develop a game at this point or anything crazy like that. but I'd like something where I can sorta walk around and get a feel for wether or not I like the way I've textured surfaces adn such.

You are talking about two different things there. MaxScript is a language particular to Max that only works in Max. You can edit the script files using any text edtior -- they are just text files. Look in the Max help/ driectory for the MaxScript guide and reference.

For moe general scripting languages suitable for scripting games and Ogre, you can look into Python (and the PyOgre addon, see the Addons Forum, green button at top of page), or you can use Lua or Squirrel or Ruby or other langauges and runtimes with Ogre. Ogre itself is not scriptable, since it's just a rendering engine -- scripting is more relevant in terms of an overall game engine.

Your best bet for your second point is use oFusion. It comes with its own Ogre scene manager and format, and you can just load it up and go. You most likely will not get around having to write some code, but you should be able to integrate oFusion with the demos. See the oFusion forums for more (addons forum, same as PyOgre).

Ok. For someone with limited programing expirience (a little C++, and even less VB.net) is harder to implament a program written in python, or any language for that matter. The script i've learned for max seems relatively simple. I'd like to keep my experiments with learning this as simple as possible until I start to get a handle on this whole thing ;) . I'll start reading into python if thats where i should start. I'm just looking for someone to kinda shove me in a direction to wander for a while.

Thank you for the help so far.

So I guess in summary. I'm learning the modeling, and scripting at work as a student worker. The ultamate goal at this point is to make a square room that I could walk around in, in a sorta first person view. I've obviously got a longer way to go than I though. I was just trying to avoid asking the obvious beginner question.

PyOgre is probably a good place to start. Python is an interpreted language that can get you going fairly quickly.

Ok I'll start googling for stuff on python. (I'm assuming pyogre is something i can find around here. ) I know this gets asked alot, but can you point me to a good place for tutorials. I'll try to document what i find into something that resembles a semi-complete tutorial if find what i need. I'll pass it along to whom ever here and they can decide if its something worth posting for the 500 other beginners that stumble across you guys.

I tried to post in the PyOgre forums, and its wouldnt let me log in, it said that i hadnt activated my account. I am assuming my account here is part of that forum too. (should i just pm the admins about this or who should I talk to)

I was wondering. Since I havent done a whole long in Python should I start my learning I the python editor or start learning in the PyOgre set up?

The two forums are kept separate, including user account databases. You need to register over there too.
