The TerrainSceneManager uses heightmaps. You can use mesh if you want, you'll just need to use the Paging Scene Manager and the tool it has to cut up your mesh into tiles.

ok thanks.

>>The TerrainSceneManager uses heightmaps
so i have to load static terrain objects seperately? eg buildings. houses.
- so in 3DS i would create a height map.
- then create the buildings
- and load them seperately in ogre

>>use the Paging Scene Manager and the tool it has to cut up your mesh into tiles
- can i load buildings with the mesh?
- or, like the terrainscenemanager, is it best to load them seperately?

Umm, unless I am missing something here, the MapSplitter xavier is referring to doesnt split meshes up, it splits heightmaps. Meshes would need to be created and split up by hand. He is mistaken.
Wiki wrote:The input to the mapsplitter is the original big single terrain heightmap that will be splitted into pages, with correct size and format, so that you can run the plugin. (It won't work with unsplitted heightfield map. (unless you're using only one page.))

I could have sworn that tuan said it works for mesh as well, but apparently not.

As to the question, yes, you would have to place your buildings on the heightmap. Scene formats such as dotScene exist to help with this, or you can just use oFusion with Max.
