3DS exporters

Post by kneeride »

Hello. how do i export a 3DS model into ogre? I've had a look around for some documentation, but am a little confused.

Do I need oFusion do do this?
What exporters are available?
Which are the best exporters?

Are there any tips I should follow?
eg Orientation (eg have model on X/Z plane, top Y, facing X (or whatever))

Thanks.

EDIT: ok, i've found 3D Studio Max Mesh & Animation Exporter v1.0.7 from the downloads page. i guess i'm off to a good start ;)

Since 3ds is an older format, your best option may be to using something (like Blender) to import the 3ds file, and then once it has the data, you can just use the Mesh exporter from there.

Any of them will work -- the Maxscript exporter you found on the Downloads page (Purloined Letter, anyone? ;) ), oFusion, or my WIP plugin-based exporter. They all will get your model from Max to Ogre.

That solution implies that you actually have 3D Studio max, which I didn't assume. If you do not, and you just have .3ds files, take my road. If you have Max and can already open the files there, take xavier's.

<edit>After reading the OP's post again, most likely xavier is correct, but the topic name (and subsequent searches by those looking for 3ds converters) will be confusing to some. I see 3ds and think of the file-type, not the modeler. Maybe its just me :).</edit>

There is a 3ds2mesh converter in the tools somewhere as well. YMMV on its effectiveness.
