SoC 2007 is ON for OGRE
Ok, so now we've been approved for the SoC 2007 (yay!), it's time to get everything organised.
Thanks to the mentors who have volunteered - please register yourself at http://code.google.com/soc/mentor_step1.html asap. Anyone who hasn't volunteered to be a mentor yet, please step up as soon as you can.
Communication and Backup Mentors / Admin
This year, Google are asking for backup mentors and a backup administrator for the project. This is to deal with absences and unexpected drop-outs. What I'd like to propose for SoC 2007 is that we assign 2 mentors officially to each project, with one being the lead and effectively the only direct mentor should all go well, but that all mentors are effectively in the loop and can offer support and advice should the need arise. I'm going to propose that all project-related non-chat communication happens through this forum this year, rather than mentors / students using email - this way we improve the visibility of the ongoing progress projects to the wider community and also allow all the mentors to keep at least somewhat up to speed with all projects, and can chip in if needed.
I'm in need of a backup admin in case I'm away - any volunteers? Generally once SoC starts properly there's not much non-mentor stuff to do anyway so if I do my job properly being a backup admin shouldn't take any actual time, it's more a fallback.
Project Wiki
I'll set up a new wiki page for the projects as last year, that works well for the fairly static reference materials I think.
Mentor tips
I picked this up from one of the google mailing lists, if you haven't seen it already it's worth a look: http://primates.ximian.com/~federico/do ... index.html
Student applications are now in progress and the deadline is March 23rd. We then get a week to rank them since the deadline for the student choices is April 2nd. So it's going to be a busy couple of weeks!
