Obama's nomination, VP

Post by johnhpus »

Hey guys. Just curious what everyone thinks about Obama winning the nomination. Who would you like to see chosen for VP?

Henry Rollins.
Although I'd prefer him as president.

I am afraid that will never materialize because from I what understand, the president has to born in USA (and of course, USA citizen). California governorship has no this restriction however.

And although many people outside of the USA has hoped something better with Obama's nomination, the USA international policy has always been shaped by the system, not by the person. In other word, don't be too hopeful

Arnold is actually trying to have that changed so any American citizen of so many years can become president. He has gotten quite a lot of support too. Must admit that the way it stands now is a bit weird. So your American, did the whole citizenship thing maybe 30+ years ago and your still only second class.

Would be interesting if they changed it, I can't really see Arnie becoming president even if they did.

I'm guessing you mean the fake tv one, since the real Josiah Bartlett (Governor of New Hampshire, second person to sign the declaration of independence) died over 200 years ago. I think there's some rule against zombie presidents.

I was serious about Henry. He'd never want to do it, which makes him even more qualified.

Henry Rollins is in a fact a very smart man, and I wouldn't mind seeing him in political office either.

Yes, I was referring to the West Wing version. I should of said Martin Sheen instead.

But for a zombie president? I don't think many people would object. As long as he had his daily amount of brains during his term and didn't start World War Z.

John McCain is pretty much a zombie these days, isn't he?

Also, I spit cereal all over my monitor while listening to the audio-book version of World War Z when Mark Hamill did his bit - really wasn't expecting Skywalker in a zombie book.

It better be .. I don’t want a dictator with unlimited powers.

But what you refer as the system others refer to as the American national interest - so yeah, don't be too hopefull, there is a good chance it won't align with various priorities of other nations :)

I decided to stay a British citizen/subject when I moved here 10 years ago. Figured that if I can't be president then there wasn't much point in becoming a citizen ;D

Well that is not what I mean although you are right in your way.

I don't think that the system really champion American people interest. At the moment all presidential nominees (suprise.. surprise.. both Republicans and Democrats) have to prove their worth to several powerful lobbying parties which actually constitutes minority of Americans out there.

Make no mistake, I do admire certain aspect of how democracies are practiced and run in America, but there are many Machiavellians or Realpolitik being practiced there. That is probably why Obama is called naive - I have a strong feeling that this is right

I think I will go back to the topic  My short answer is not Hillary Clinton - she is too ambitious to be the President so she might not sit well with Obama being her boss! :) That is just a marriage of convenience. Okay having said that, I don't know who will be his VP.

I believe that after seeing Caroline Kennedy's name as part of the committee that will help Mr. Obama name his VP there is zero chance that Hillary will be the VP. Among the power mongers in the not-so-Democratic party, those aligned with the Kennedys are totally at war with those aligned with the Clintons.

Mr. Obama's electability will certainly be an open question right up to the election. He is a horse in a race with three lame legs, his Liberal record, his race and the perception that he is a closet muslim. Regardless of the truth or fairness of any of these arguments, these issues have dogged him throughout the primary, and have not been neutralized.

Remember, so far the fight has been between two prominent Democrats among Democrats. When the election is held, the great middle of not-so-politically-committed voters will tip the balance.

<* Wes *>

[And yes, I realize Mr. McCain limps under the load of baggage he is carrying, but this was Barrack's thread.]

Obama is anything but naïve …

His main problem is that he really lack any experience operating in a competitive environment. After all this guy comes from Chicago ( http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/29/ ... index.html )

It make sense? Than it's also logical that John McCain can't be the next president. He's not born in america like Arnold.

When Arnold would become president it would be so amazing...I think he's the born leader and would be perfect for this job.
But however, every next president would be better than the current guy. In my opinion, Bush was the worst president in the History of the united states of america.

I remember seeing Arnold on Jay Leno's show. I don't remember Arnold's exact words, but he stated he doesn't have any interest in advancing any further in the political realm.

I am sure that if it were not possible for John McCain to be elected President for legal reasons, it would have come out long, long ago (as in, while he first entertained the notion of running, years ago).

His parents were US citizens, and US armed forces bases are American territory, so he's legal anyway:
McCain was born at Coco Solo Naval Air Station[1] in Panama to naval officer John S. McCain, Jr. (1911–1981) and Roberta (Wright) McCain (b. 1912). At that time, the Panama Canal was under American control, and the McCain family was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone.

Why do people think that America = USA ?

By your definition Mexicans or Cubans for example can become USA president :D
