Freaky, isn't it?Tom Clancy's original Ghost Recon game, which had U.S. special forces secretly going into... T'bilisi, Georgia to deal with Russian invasion forces backed by ultra-nationalist hardliners. The "future date" of the 2001 game was... August 2008.)

Well, yeah .. of course, why do you think Russians are doing what they are doing now.steven wrote:During her visit in Georgia last July:

Given this new war, the chances that Georgia will join NATO are pretty much zero.

What!? I don't follow this logic.warmi wrote:Well, yeah .. of course, why do you think Russians are doing what they are doing now.
If someone is attacked he doesn't deserve to be part of a defense alliance?
If the georgians did attack it would be logic - they wouldn't be stable enough to be part of NATO.
Btw I don't pretend (like some) to understand the reason of this aggression I don't have access to this level of intel (neither does any of us).

Yeah, pretty much.steven wrote:What!? I don't follow this logic.warmi wrote:Well, yeah .. of course, why do you think Russians are doing what they are doing now.

NATO is not about fighting wars but preventing them ...
In any case, NATO these days pretty much means the United States army and they are way too busy with their own wars.

So far the only sources for the game taking place in august that I've found are the FreeRepublic website (where warmi got his quote) and Wikipedia, where an anonymous user inserted the word august into the storyline section today.
Everywhere else I've read so far (as in stuff written before today) only says 2008, not august 2008.

It's normal for us here in Finland that the Russian military airplanes or helicopters cross into our airspaceEvak wrote:Russia has been flexing its muscles for a while now. Invading British airspace and being chased off by the RAF over a dozen times in the past year.
When we complain, they either say:
a) it didn't happen
b) that they will investigate
c) it was a mistake
d) it was a mistake and that they are sorry
Yes, the d has happened as well.
Remember when Estonia joined NATO? Well, not much earlier, Russian military airplanes crossed into Estonia (according to Estonia)! I gotta say I laughed when I heard about that. Because, what I was expecting became true. I was expecting them to do that and then they did it. And don't tell me it was a mistake
It has to be said, Sweden also had their military airplane in our airspace without our permission some time ago. But that is not normal. Normal for us is to see a report in our newspapers that a Russian military aircraft has crossed our border.
There was a decision made a few years ago here that each and every time that happens, it will be reported in our media so that we all get to know about it. Previously they had not been telling us everytime it happened.
I don't know, either they don't actually know how to fly or how to navigate, or they are very sloppy, or they just do it on purpose to keep us on our toes and to test our radar systems and our reaction times. Every time it happens, our fighter jets go check what is going on. Maybe they want to know how much time it takes for us to react. I don't know which one it is...
...sorry, off-topic wildly, but I heard a story from a friend who knows a Finnish border guard. The story the border guard told was that several Russian military jets sometimes fly in formation towards our border at a high speed, and then only a short distance away from the border they turn away. This has to be nerve-wrecking for the people who monitor our radars! I think it is one way they test our radar systems and our reaction time, as in these cases also our own fighter jets have to react (there is no way to know if they are going to turn away from our border, so our own fighter jets have to be alerted every time this happens).

Well, watching the latest moves of navy in Black See, all I can say - it smells like a second Cuban Missile Crisis, or a 3rd World War involving Western States, Middle East States and Russia/China...
Tom Clancy will get another story for his dubious stories
