Many, many instances of link.exe?!

Post by PolyVox »

Guys, I am having a really strange problem. I've brought a new machine, installed VS2005, and am trying to build Ogre from source. It's going increadibly slowly (been building the main .dll for an hour now) and on opening Task Manager I noticed it is running multiple copies of 'link.exe':

Surely this can't be normal?! Notice how one of the instances (marked in red) is using significantly more memory than the others. This is on a clean install of Windows XP and VS2005+SP1 on a Quad-core CPU with 2Gb of RAM. Any ideas what is going on?!

I stopped the build and started it again. Just one instance to start with, but then they started multiplying again...

Try going into ogremain's properties and turning off incremental linking under linker/general.
It's a problem that only seems to hit some people, and I don't think a reason was ever found. Most people can do ogre with incremental linking fine with vs2005, others (like me) have it get stuck and sit for ages in the linking step until all ram and page file are drained then it fails.
