So I have this nice little Debian GNU/Linux server in my Local Area Network (LAN) and I would like to access it from a Windows XP Home computer which is in the same LAN.
There is a ADSL/router box which is the connecting point for the two computers.
So what do you recommend that I use to manage the Linux server from the Windows XP Home computer?
The Linux server computer will not have a monitor or a keyboard so access to it would be through the network.
Would you recommend SSH? Why? Or something else?
I have never done this sort of network setup before so advice based on your experience is very welcome.
By reading some websites it seems SSH is generally recommended but is it really the right choice when the computers are in the same LAN. Usually the websites which recommend SSH talk about accessing a computer over the Internet, which isn't really the case here now. I have no need and no plans to allow access to the server from the Internet.
I'm not a Debian Linux newbie - I've been using a desktop Debian for about 6 years, sometimes almost forgetting I have Windows installed as well. But as I said doing the network setup is something I haven't done so I welcome your advice.

Use putty for ssh, and get used to it. link

Yeah, I'd agree. Putty and WinSCP (or konsole and dolphin from KDE Windows).

SSH was the first thing I could think of when I started thinking what to use. So I am interested in if there are other choices which might be more suitable to my situation (doing it all inside a LAN, and not open it to the Internet).
I am also thinking of using the Samba file sharing. To open a directory from the server so I could move files easily between the two computers.

For simply doing file transfer etc., maybe look into NFS. I've found it blazingly fast for file transfers and excels best when in a LAN.

Thanks, I will look into it.
In fact I think I already installed NFS as I selected "File server" when installing Debian and I think it installed exactly that. I will need to study how to use it. I will also look at Samba though - likely the one wins which is easier to set up.
