Unreal Engine 3 is now FREE!

Post by _tommo_ »

http://www.udk.com/index.html

Epic has released the UDK, that according to them is Unreal Engine 3 complete with ALL the tools for FREE for non commercial use on PC
And i suppose i don't have to explain you how good the Unreal toolset + engine is, you get all of this

Plus, commercial license looks really nice for the ton of features you get, 99$ for year plus 25% of the profits whenever you get some...

Obviously i'm downloading it right now, but i can't stop thinking that there's a "BUT" somewhere :D
Should this be really UE3 for nearly-free, what could be the reasons to use anything else after now?

Lol, judging by what the people over at the blitz forum are saying it's a beta and has a lot of stability problems. So disappointing and one has to wonder how much they will support it. Still if it was kept inline with the commercial version it would be great for some people. Seems like the editor isn't holding up to well on many peoples machines.

The specs needed for the editor are rather high though... 8GB RAM? It wouldn't surprise me at all if it's less than advertised, too. I can't see Epic being too bothered about the stability of the public release of the UDK.
