Etiquette for ending parenthetical statement with a smiley
What is the proper etiquette for ending a parenthetical statement (a statement in parenthesis, such as this one) with a smiley, when a smiley graphic is not used? Do you add a second closing parenthesis (such as this =)), or just let the smiley be the closing parenthesis (such as this =)? Or maybe a space between the smiley and closing parenthesis (like this =) )? I dunno, I think two parentheses looks weird. Any thoughts? It's such a small thing, but it always bothers me when I do it!

I either put a space in or use 
(i.e. : D) as the smiley.

My opinion is that automatic graphical emoticons are an abomination from Hades and have no textual validity. Therefore, all decisions are made in terms of plain ASCII text. Having 1 closing parenthesis seems the perfectly reasonable thing to do, even if it is part of a textual emoticon. If people don't understand it in a web forum, that's just too friggin' bad. I notice in this forum, there's a sidebar where you can turn Smilies OFF if you really want to. I think all 733t 4@ck3rZ are perfectly capable of inferring the existence of a closing parenthesis from the presence of a graphical emoticon. Do any of 'em actually not have a parenthesis? Well, a curly brace might be gauche, but who cares.

Indeed a vexing problem...
To counter this conondrum, and at the same time the nefarious graphical emoticon replacement machines, on can use a mirrored version. For example (: and ): remain proper smileys.
