since there hasn't been a new post in a the off topics in a whole 7 days now, i thought i might as well spam the board.
i have a feeling this silence has somethings to do with Civ 5 being released (since this is a programmers forum, which makes the average subscriber 67.77% more likely to be a civ player)
so, how do you like the new Civilization ?
i'm so happy about the one-unit-per-tile... at last, wars are actually exciting.. i miss religion though (even if it wasn't fully realized in civ 4); always liked empire building games that have randomness and things the player cannot control directly, but have to adapt. i'm still waiting for civil wars and divisions, but the city states are a welcome addition.
diplomacy is a mess though...
btw, i'll have a lute in a matter of 2-3 weeks!!! how awesome is that???

Re: DIE Bismark!!!
I like most of it, there are some bits;
I don't like so much:
- Much slower than Civ 4, especially when you have been playing for a while. It really thrashes my hard-drive, even after playing.
- Crashes when saving sometimes.
- Can't trade maps, or certain technology - Like you could in Civ 4.
- No documentation on what the pacts do.
- Although one unit per tile is nice, it would be nice if you could have a worker doing some on the tile; i.e. build a farm, whilst another worker is creating on a road on the same tile. Perhaps it could be enabled by the civics options.
- AI seems a bit weaker. You don't know why they dislike you, or not.
- Even after all day playing, Germany still won't go to war with me, even though I surrounded its borders with tons of units and acted like a complete cad. I had to be the "bad guy" in the end. I won though.
- Annoying Camera; When I want to do something but it insists that I pay attention to this worker that has finished a road. I'm in the middle of a War!!
- Wonder animations aren't as good. There wasn't even one for the Apollo program, I landed on the Moon! I should have something.
- No Vassal States.
- Religion isn't as big as it was in Civ 4.
Things I do like though:
- Better graphics
- The new hex tile system
- Just as addictive.
- Plenty of ways to win.
- It's Civilisation!
But Minecraft is better.

Re: DIE Montezuma!!!
well you can always tell the worker to sleep ..
just remembered something i forgot to mention: Washington asked me to attack Darius I. problem? i had three of them, all bordering both me and him. there should be some hot fix for this.. either different names or showing the flag in the diplomatic proposal..

Re: DIE Montezuma!!!
Yes, but he's finished his task and somehow he's needs are more important than "I have war to plan and I need to send these tanks into Berlin", but no he's finished his farm and he has nothing to do.
Priorities.

Re: DIE Montezuma!!!
godamn lazy workers.. always nagging and asking for money. should send them to war and see how they like it
a game that just popped in my head when you noted vassal states : Knights of Honor.. i really liked that one. had one of the most dynamic game-play i seen. borders were changing constantly, unstable kingdoms were dividing in civil wars and vassalage was both very well realized and a very good alternative to full destruction.. too bad the rest sucked.

Re: DIE Montezuma!!!
I can't play it because of lack of time :/
I think I'll try it next time I'm unemployed...

Re: DIE Montezuma!!!
Things I like about Civ5:
Minimal units:
With Civ4, the unit management got pretty crazy. In the late stages of the game, I'd routinely have like 50+ troops and 15+ boats sailing across the water to take out an enemy on a different continent. In Civ5, you have way less units, but they matter more.
Combat strategy:
Combat feels more strategic, with the 1-unit-per-tile, the hexes, and the ranged attacks.
I also really like how your units don't always win-or-die in a given attack.
Happiness:
I like the change to happiness being a civilization-wide stat, rather than per-city. It minimizes the city micromanagement without breaking the strategy.
City States:
Seem like an interesting new angle so far.
Culture / Policy:
Adds a new layer of strategy to gaining culture points.
-------------
I think there are some things I don't like about Civ5. But it might just be my inexperience with the game, so I'll give it time. It takes a while to get the nuance of a new strategy game.
But overall, it's a solid Civ offering.

Re: DIE Montezuma!!!
played some more.. some AI things i noticed:
- the AI would never liberate a city;
- civ hate/love relationships with the AI are still weird - i gave another civ 2 cities for free, one of which was their capital (which i took from their enemy) and they still hate me. if you liberate a city and revive another civ, it will hate your guts for no apparent reason.
- the AI is very bad at recognizing death traps (especially when they include range units). the AI simply keeps sending more and more units. allowed me to win major victories against armies more than 4 times my own..
- one time the enemy was sending units by sea to try and flank me, and i was death trapping them with two caravels over and over; he had 4 frigates in firing range, and never fired a shot..
basically, the new fighting system demands a more keen AI, but i'll guess they'll upgrade little by little (or as most of the times, we'll get a good mod)
i still love it though
i sometimes miss Call to Power and Alpha Centauri ... there really aren't many alternatives or twists to civ

Re: DIE Montezuma!!!
ok... i have no words after reading this:
this guy just reads too much Dan Brown......... the thread is awesome; too bad it was locked.
on a different note, i managed to get my capital city to contain 13 wonders and produce 150 science!! but then i lost because i only had only 4 cities defended by 2 spearmen.... it was actually going pretty well until 18th century with just the 4..
