Hi there
I'm a student at Wuerzburg University and just visited a lecture from Prof. Dr. Jürgen Döllner from HPI (Hasso Plattner Institute Postdam) about improved and efficient ways of displaying text information in 3D graphics.
They're releasing a new library, which will be scene graph independent (and should thus be compatible to ogre) that addresses this aspect.
They had some very impressive videos what their system is able to do:
(Unfortunately there is less material on the internet, but that shall change in near future)
They've developed algorithms to determine the best position of a text-information inside a 3d world. Therefore, e.g. it is possible to visualize 3d (city) maps without overlapping text while still being able to see the important information.
Another example was addining textual information to 3d objects in a 3d world, so that the text should be displayed at the closest possible position to the corresponding object while not intersecting other objects in the 3d world.
This features are especially interesting for 3d visualisation of citys or it could be (that's what i thought of) a good new technique to display "pure" textual information (e.g. like health of enemies in a shooter game) in games.
Their library is, as mentioned above, not yet released. But a release is planned for the next months (and it shall be open source, of course)
I asked whether they're thinking of colaborating with etablished scene graph / 3d projects (like ogre), but they're at the moment only colaborating with OpenSceneGraph.
With the plugin system of ogre in mind, i think it wouldn't be that hard to implement a interface between ogre and this text-rendering library.
Once they realease their library, it will be available at hpi3d.de
They're working together with companies like Nokia, Adobe and AutoDesk.
I hope that helps you to get a new state-of-the-art feature into ogre
Greetings,
Daniel

Only use I am thinking is item drops where you have lots in one place
But yes it is interesting but definatly for a plugin

Re: Improved Text-Features using algorithms from HPI
It's really cool to have dynamic text be placed the way they're doing it.
As I said, I thought that thinking about how to place text in 3D was somehow obvious, but they had real interesting examples shown in the lecture. Too sad I left my camera at home
Unfortunately there is still no new information, not to mention source code, on their website...
