Hello!

Post by MisterMage »

I have finally decided to make an account here at Ogre! For the passed week I have been working on my own little Engine which pulls together Ogre3D, Bullet Physics (OgreBullet), MyGUI, RakNet and some other little State/Component Management features that I have made myself. You see, I am currently in College, New England Institute of Technology (NEIT), getting my Bachelors Degree in Video Game Development and I am in my last two quarters; which means Senior Project is starting. To make a long story short, this passed week has been my off week and classes start on Tuesday. Anyway, I have been working purely off of the (Wiki + Google) combo to get things done with getting Ogre set up with all those features, previously stated, implemented; I couldn't be happier. I just thought I would make an account on here because now I am going fully in-depth with RakNet/Rendering/Animation/etc. and getting a simple FPS game up and going and I may need some help.

Not really sure what else to say besides...
My name is Bobby. I am 20 years old (21 in may) currently going to school for my Bachelors Degree in Video Game Development with high hopes of getting a job somewhere close to home and doing what I love to do. Rather than choosing to go with a AAA Game Engine and using it for my senior project, I have taken it upon myself to write my own little Engine and take part in the Open-Source world of programming; I just feel more accomplished that way :D .

Also, I wanted to thank anyone and everyone who edits the Wiki on here. The tutorials and documentation are outstanding and I didn't have to ask anyone at any point "how do i do this?", I love it.

Glad to hear i'm not the only student working on a game engine in their spare time.

Sounds like we have similar circumstances.

Are you developing an editor and other tools with your engine?

With the 20 week constraint I have on my project I don't think I will be making any tools for the engine. Long term however I can see that happening but again no idea whats going to happen later on

What kind of things were you going, or already, make?

I am targeting my engine at a very specific project I have in mind. I am working on tool creation, I am currently trying to get my engine to work with Qt so I can start building a scene editor.

I am starting to get bored with the project though, and I am starting to become more eager to start making an actual game... So I may throw in the towel and use a fully featured engine like NeoAxis or the Cry engine soon.

Don't bother then as you might get bored with making the actual game. You'll have to throw the towel in again and buy a fully featured game like Battlefield 3 or Crysis

Jokes aside, any serious game (i.e. super fine-tuned gameplay, very polished art, etc.) will require a lot of effort which will be boring many times a day. Keep that in mind.

Or boring many times a year.

All worth it in the end.
