Ogre 1.8.0 released

Post by CABAListic »

Hey guys,

we have finally released Ogre 1.8 aka 'Byatis', so this is the new stable version from now on. The download links on the website have been updated; the front page is still missing an announcement, but that'll come shortly.

Originally this release was planned for December/January, so I apologise for the delay. We noticed that a number of our samples were in a broken state and that would look rather bad for an official new major release. Cleaning the samples up consumed more time than we thought, and there are still a few issues left. But we decided that the samples are now in a presentable state again, and this release had to happen to get the Ogre project going, so there you have it. I realise this may not be the most punctual and smooth release in the history of the Ogre project, but given that it's been our first major update without sinbad, I hope you'll be lenient with us :)

In the near future we would also like to discuss with you how to move Ogre forward towards the 1.9 and 2.0 releases. There have already been quite a few posts here on important updates for Ogre's future. Right now, we are discussing internally to decide which issues we as the Ogre team consider the most critical. Give us a few days to build a consensus, then we will present our opinion to you, and we can discuss if you agree with us and how we will proceed to get all the important things (and, ideally, some nice-to-have things) done.

Awesome news and great job guys! I just hope you had some power left to throw in a simple "What's new in 1.8" for those who didn't watch every commit to the repository (like the lazy me  ).

I did include a changelog, but since I had to assemble it from the raw commit logs, it's probably not perfect, and I might have missed a couple of things. More careful documentation and updates to the relevant wiki pages on progress and roadmap will be required for the future.

Oh wow, that was surprising. I just checked for a new version after over a year of updating and found 1.8.0 from today! At the same time I was wondering why there was no news about it, so it was a bit strange. Then I found this post and read that it's correct that there is no post yet. I'm compiling right now :)

But where can I correct this?

[edit]Oh, it looks like the problem has been encountered before 2010 already. This fixed it for me: http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 95#p398786[/edit]

Have you tried the ogredeps repository? https://bitbucket.org/cabalistic/ogredeps
That should give you a clean FreeImage library.

Can I asked what happened with the shaders in the Terrain component in the 1.8.0 release?

I tried to use my water in the 1.8.0 RC. In order to get a depth map, I render a pass where I replace every rendered entity's material with a depth material, which uses a shader that assumes that the vertex positions are in the POSITION register. This worked fine in 1.7, but somehow gets messed up in 1.8.0 RC (the terrain is now flipped and the wrong size when rendering the depth pass).

I'm compiling Ogre 1.8.0 now, but I'm assuming it has the same problem.

Not sure I understand completely, but sinbad added vertex compression for the Terrain component in 1.8. Perhaps that is the source of your problem? You might need to adapt your shader to deal with that, or perhaps disable the feature. (TerrainGlobalOptions::setUseVertexCompressionWhenAvailable I think.)

Ah, nice. If that's the culprit, at least my water would still be useable under 1.8.

Great work anyhows guys (and girls and ogres!), will try to migrate after lunch. :P

Unfortunately, there is no real changelog for this release. We need to setup a better process for that area internally.

There is however a wiki page that lists some parts: http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/tiki-ind ... yatisNotes

And a second one in the repo: https://bitbucket.org/sinbad/ogre/src/8 ... geLog.html

There were some first threads prior to GSoC2012, but ATM we as the team are internally aligning our ideas and will then (possibly within the next few days) publish our ideas and trigger a public discussion. So stay tuned :)
