Any plans/interest in Windows 10 Universal Apps?

Post by simedj »

I don't know anything about how the UA stuff is being implemented, has anyone started looking into supporting it in Ogre? Has enough information been released anyone can even comment on the subject yet?

Currently there are no concrete plans for Win10 support and all the additions & changes it will/might bring. Hence no active development efforts are currently undertaken in that area by the Ogre team. This has two main reasons:

1. Win10 is still quite a bit off in the future.
2. There are currently much more important topics for us as the team to focus on. One being of course Ogre 2.1 and the D3D11 render system.

In the future the situation might change, but until then Win10 support is not a priority for us. However, if some community members want to drive that topic and create a pull-request once they implemented a first stable version, you are very much welcome to do so.

Windows 10 will come with DX12 as standard so that would probably need implementing first.

I think DirectX 11.3 will be available for Windows 10, too. Microsoft will knock out a lot of computer games if they drop DX11 from Win10. This doesn't fit to the strategy publishing an upgrade from Win7/8 to Win10 for free. All fans of current computer games wouldn't change to Win10 if they could not continue playing their games. So, finishing DX11 is a good idea. DX12 and Vulkan can wait at the moment.

I wasn't saying they won't have backwards comparability windows 10 should work with DX9+ but the official DX version will be 12.
