Pictures -> Texture Software?

Post by Telamon »

Hey,

I've read that when cyan made Myst, they took a bunch of digital pictures of interesting textures on objects, then converted them into textures for their game.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any software that can take a digital photo of a texture and turn it into something that is tileable.

Something that uses texture synthesis techniques instead of just basic image processing would be awesome.

Thanks

I think there was a plugin for Gimp in the past to help tile textures, but I don't where it is or what is its name. If you want to make textures from photos, here are too articles I found interesting on this subject :

Gimp still has an automated tool for getting textures to tile but there are tutorials on manually doing it as well, that will work with The Gimp/Photoshop...

In the Gimp you can open your image, then go to Filters->Map->Make Seamless.

Does anyone know if Gimp has a high-pass filter? I looked for it but didn't see it. It looks pretty useful :)

here you go

but the filter does not do all the work there is some conditions to keep in mind, the most important is keep care of the lightning when you take the photo. try to have the most uniform lightning on the surface you want to capture, try to avoid all sorts of shadows
