Free Video tutorials on Importing Animations into Ogre.

Post by McSwan »

Hi,

Download from here:

http://www.Arica3D.com/AnimateTutorial1

Brief on tutorials: Importing from 3ds max. (~2 hours)

1. I take a look at the model fresh from the animator, and try to export. Sometimes it works and all is great, but this time it doesn't work, so need to go through the lengthy process of re-figuring and skinning the model.

2. Figuring the model - If you know how to figure biped, then you probably don't need to watch this one. One thing to keep in mind is to keep the bones simple/few as possible.

3. Skinning - Again if you're familiar with skinning you don't need to watch this one. Just remeber to set the bone limit to 4 or less.

4. This is where I explore exporting the model using a numer of features in the biped rollout (flattening footsteps/keyframing every frame). I also talk a little bit about the xml files, and the ogre converting.

5. In this process I add the second animation to the export. Note this isn't a trivial process, there is a couple of catchme's to watch out for.

If people find it useful let me know on mswan {at} qantmcollege.edu.au, and I might try and make some more :o

ps. Forgive the "umming and arring" ( hey it was my first video tute! ( wasn't sure if it was even recording! ).

Will have to download this a later (I've nearly used up my monthly download limit for peak time on my ADSL account, got a lot more usage allowed after midnight here).
Thanx for making these tho, should be good

mods, maybe make this sticky and move it to 'artists' forum? (unsticky the other one as it's a few pages long)

Hi downloaded these last night. Very high quality, packed full of very useful information! Excellent work. I hope we see more 3dsmax artists generating high quality ogre content as a result of these tutorials!

Though why be so generous to the 3dsmax users, and leave the other 3d modellers out in the dark? What would be way awesome would be some similar tutorials for the other software users.

Can't stress it enough, way awesome contribution for our happy and thriving community!

Hi, The trackers just going to be down for about the next 10 hours. On the + side though is it should be alot more stable and a bit quicker when it comes back up.

Ok Tracker is now back up..... Hopefully it should all be good. Hard to test untill someone tries to connect to it :-), so if you have any problems connecting just send me a PM.

RoundSparrow now has these files up for direct download so the tracker is no longer needed. You can get the files from..

Sure, thanks for making the tutorials!
Looking to hire people working out of their home to do C++ Ogre programming. Blender artists also wanted. Looking for long-term relationships. PM on forums or contact via AIM or email Art@Arica3D.com

Awesome, though it might be a good idea to edit the original torrent post since the tracker was taken down.

Thanks for the video tutorials. I'll probably be referring to them often now that I'm ready to try and export my biped animation into Ogre. Will probably be bothering you with questions soon :D

Hey McSwan. Awesome tutorial, thx alot!

I've run into this sole problem right here: http://www.ogre3d.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=90711
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And also, just a hint, since you struggled with centering your model and pivot: You can just right click the two arrows (pointing up and down) next to the coord input fields to easily reset the value to zero. I use that all the time, and since you didn't I figured you might not know about this handy feature.

Thx again.

hmm, the link to the file is no longer working? Can someone post a copy somewhere, I really need some help in getting started in getting animation out of 3D studio and this seems like a video to learn how to do that.

I put up a mirror. Be warned, the file is almost 500MB in size.

I see a few people have had trouble downloading the whole thing in one big bite.
So I've broken up the archive into 50MB pieces. The 500MB file is not there anymore.
Hopefully this'll be easier to download.

http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... part02.rar

WinRAR and its Linux/Mac command-line counterparts are available at:
http://www.rarlab.com

And if you do get errors after downloading, try using some PAR2 files to repair them.
They can repair errors in any combination of the files, up to 50MB worth of errors.

QuickPAR for Windows is available at: http://www.quickpar.org.uk
Not sure about Linux/Mac variants.

http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... rials.par2 26K, 0 blocks
http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... 00+01.PAR2 410K, 1 block
http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... 00+02.PAR2 820K, 2 blocks
http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... 00+04.PAR2 1.6M, 4 blocks
http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... 00+08.PAR2 3.1M, 8 blocks
http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... 00+16.PAR2 6.2M, 16 blocks
http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... 00+31.PAR2 12M, 31 blocks
http://www.greygames.com/Ogre/OgreTutor ... 00+57.PAR2 22M, 57 blocks

Start with the first file, OgreTutorials.par2. It will verify the files, and tell you how many blocks you need to repair them.
Then just download enough of the other PAR2 files to fill that number of blocks.

Just curious if anyone wanted to see a similar training vid for Maya -- if you are, post it 'cause I'm already working on characters so it's no big deal to record it (and do voiceovers).

In case there's any doubt about how popular video tutorials are, here's some stats regarding the 3DSMax videos made by McSwan:

Code: Select all

              Downloads
September 2005 - 13
October 2005 - 47
November 2005 - 20
December 2005 - 25
January 2005 - 3
---------------------------------
Total 108
And that doesn't count from May 2005 - August 2005!

Ok well Part 1 is finished, it's 35 mins but 633MBs, RARed!! Dunno how McSwan crammed 2 hrs into 500 megs, maybe mine is too big (screen-size)? At this rate, the whole tutorial will run past 2 gigs...

SO either someone with unlimited bandwidth can host it, or I need a tip on how to reduce the size. ;)

Use the Video Lan Player (VLC) from videolan.org. It rocks!
Takes mov, avi, ogg, anything. Even obscure codecs.
/* Less noise. More signal. */
Ogitor Scenebuilder - powered by Ogre, presented by Qt, fueled by Passion.
OgreAddons - the Ogre code suppository.
