Yeah. I'd appreciate that. Such an exporter for Maya could make my life MUCH easier.

PS. Quite off-topic though.

Not a chance...

Post by Lee04 »

Not a chance...from a programmers perspective you can't just turn something like this from 3DSMax to Maya.

However the experience making the 3DSMax version can be used to
start from scratch with Maya.

It might be simpler or harder or for some features even impossible to implement in Maya.

So the question should be: Have / is someone doing or planning something like this for Maya?

I surly hope so that would really register Ogre on the 3D engine Richter scale.

Are any of the beta testers here who have actually worked with the exporter? Any insights on the workflow experience and the overall current state of the program would be awesome. :)

Hi all,

I can really understand your requests about the exporter since it will definitely be the ultimate Ogre scene editing & exporter tool for 3ds max.

Good news is that it can export probably any skeleton rig which is out there. Personally I'm using CAT which was not supported by the old exporter you can download here from the website. But Lioric's exporter supports it.
The speed of the exporter process is also outstanding. You can export a 5000 poly character with Skin Modifier and 80 bones rig in less than 2 seconds.
Material editing workflow has turned out great, too. For example, you can use your Max material as a sub-material of the Ogre material, so you can see your materials both in Max view and Ogre view. Plus, converting a Max multi-sub material to Ogre material takes just one click. By the way, material converting will take note of any Max material properties that are also supported by Ogre.
Another good point is the light support. Your Max lights are converted 1 to 1 into Ogre with realtime feedback, and can even display all shadow types that are supported by Ogre.

It's a huge task to implement all these wonderful features to an environment you can properly work with.
So far I think the current state is almost what you can call final. But as we all now, the last 2-3% will make a significant change in the overall performance, stability and flexibility of such a plug-in. A few major options are still missing and there are coming in a lot of new ideas in each testing period, not to mention the bug fixes.

Don't run out of patience and you will have a lot of fun with a complete exporter.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad everything is still in the works. I know everyone including myself can't wait to use such a powerful tool.

Thanks for the update.

Even though Lioric hasn't got it to the standard that he wants before release, perhaps he could release a beta. We all know that a beta is not perfect.

I was thinking about the feasibility of doing something similar for Blender...

I would also vote for some beta release. There are thousands of software released in beta stage out there, so releasing this baby in beta would be great (let's say without sources, and without a right to complain about bugs, errors :D ) .

Especially this could be deadly (in terms of release date) :?

Anyway... great work Lioric..... and be strong :D

Hmm, I have to keep out of that, since I am just a beta tester. But I think Lee is right that there might be the chance this tool will stay beta forever then.

Well, the ideas which have been raised were definitely a must-have in my opinion. Some of them were major options that have been missing even in respect of the old exporter. Currently, there are also some other issues Lioric is working on.

Well, what can I say..... just keep up the good work (Lioric & beta guys) you are doing.

Beta or not, it would at least have been released

If it stays beta and the beta never is released, which apparently will be the case, what's the point of continuing the development of the exporter?

To release non-beta stable version? ;)
I hope that helps a bit...

No offense, but I think those are pretty rude comments. Just like you, most of us are waiting and would love for the exporter to be released. However, it is Lioric's plugin. He can determine to release it or not to release it. We truly have no right to the plugin just a desire to use it. So, I think we should keep the correct perspective about the plugin. Please don't take it that I'm attacking you. It seems like there's a bit of irritation about the plugin not being released... I know if I was spending the time developing it I would less likely release if I was receiving what appears to be insults or at least lack of appreciation for my work.

Hope this isn't taken wrong.

Regarding the rudeness, I agree completely. Stop being rude, this exporter is someone else's passion, and as far as I know is being developed for a real project. We're lucky to even get a chance to use it, so stop whining about when it gets released and go find something else to do in the meantime.

Hear!
Agree completely: We're damn lucky that Lioric and team are releasing their in-house tool to the Ogre public.
And not only that: they are releasing it as open-source too. :)

And we are in no position to make demands.

Thats fair comment. I admit to being somewhat irritated myself as well, and i'm sorry. But the bottom line is, I am very happy that Lioric has done so much work on it, and he can of course release it when he chooses. If I could work on it to help him release it sooner then I would (as would many here) but that again would be his choice.

Of course it's Lioric's right to release whenever he want's (even not to release) and whatever he want's, we have no right to demand anything.
So I hope that all those comments about rudeness, releasing beta an so, were said with that in mind.

Something else: how is it possible (as I saw it on Lioric initial screenshots) to use ogre as a preview in 3D Max?

Appearently you can override the renderer which takes care of the viewports :)
