I use cakewalk sonar producer 3 in my little home studio, its a great little proggy Imho, and I get some pretty good results out of it

My Rig is

SB Live value
12 Channel Mixer
Akg 880 Mike
Edirol 49 Key Controller Keyboard

Its works out quite well, heres a premaster of one of our tracks

Also for arranging sound tracks etc, I would suggest playing with Propellerheads Reason, pretty Intuitive and the sound Libraries are decent

This is a pretty off topic thread and there's already tons of advice here but I want to give my two cents, which doesn't require yout to go out and buy anything. Most of the software recommend cost a lot of money and don't really do exactly what you need. Reason and audition for example.

Fist of all I don't think you need an amp, amp modellers plugins are fun and sound pretty damn good. Just plug your guitar directly into your computer mic or line in plug (SB Live has both). The line in is better.

You just need a amp moddeller plugin, try Boogex it's a vst effect, and therefore plugs into any vst host.

Krystal Audio Engine is free vst host/multi tracker/sequencer has a bunch of built in guitar effects (chorus, flanger, delay etc...)

Oh and you'll probably want a drum machine (vst instrument)

Buy a 5 dollar midi to joystick cable though, and enjoy tons of free vst instruments that you can play with your piano. (like the drum machines)

Unforutnetly I don't have any tracks with guitars in it for you, rocking out is just for fun, but I have some tracks made with free plugins (algorithms) and some old tracks I made with reason www.brokenbeat.ca/robb/music.html, a new site is in the works, trying to finish a set of new tracks.

If you are going to do this regularly, have a look at the fedora core 3 repository of the stanford university "Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics" Planet CCRMA at Home. Be sure to read A roadmap for Planet CCRMA. There you can see that they provide the packages ardour and Ecasound for multichannel recording.

If you just want a quick way to get your sound into the computer, I recommend Audacity. In contrast to some of the other posters, I hadn't had any problems with recording. There are also Sweep and ReZound, but I haven't used them for recording yet.

i think ive said it b4, but ill say it again, i dont recommend Audacity at all, if u go from quiet to loud (like a pause then a chord) ull get a fade in effect, it happens at any point u do this, i havent found a way of stopping this, if u can stop this, then itll b perfect

well thanks... actually saying that, i live around quite a few people like that too, its a rare moment to have an intelligent conversation with people, (well the people i did use to have an intelligent conversation have now gone off to university around the UK
