I'm not exactly sure I understand every step you took, but here are a few thoughts.

1. Are you in perspective viewing mode or orthographic? If you were in ortho you'd probably have a grid behind your model, so I am guessing you are in perspective. It is hard to tell if something is aligned in perspective view.
2. When selecting an edge loop, do you get all the verts? Sometimes, the back ones do not get selected.
3. If you want to constrain translation, rotation or scaling along an axis, hit the key for the axis to constrain after typing the modifier key. For example, if you want to move a bunch of verts up along the z axis a)select them b) type GKEY c) then type ZKEY d) then move your mouse e) then click.
4. If you want to translate selections in a plane, view from one of the ortho views and hit GKEY. For example, if you are viewing from the side view and hit the GKEY, you will move whatever you have selected in the YZ plane.
5. To align verts so that they are at the same Z-position try this combo: S-Z-0 . Which is "Scale along the z axis so that all things are 0 units apart in that direction".
6. It is generally easier to start with a cylinder than a circle if you are going to do the dance of extrusions. That way you start with a feeling of the mass of the object and all the normals are right.
7. For a game model, you may want a lower number of verts in your crossection. 8 will do for most objects, although a little higher may be needed for an object as large as an aircraft.

I know, it starts to get like playing and old school fighter arcade game with all the button combos, but once you get it, it is super fast.

Definately what I am experiencing! I find Blender faster and more responsive. And after a lot of goofing around I am getting a handle on things!
Even if I do have MAX, I find myself Blendering all the time. :)

All that and less than 10megs, too. It is the easiest and fastest app to start on my computer (well, except for maybe TextEdit).
