high-res ogre artwork

Post by futnuh »

Are there high-res versions of the Ogre head available? I'm after both the 2D logo in either a vector format (illustrator, svg) or high-rest bitmap and the 3D head in a generic tool-friendly format like .obj. Actually, while I'm asking, is there a body to go along with the current head? (Yes, I'm aware of the recent work on a 'new' Ogre model.) For better or for worse though, the current one is nice and iconic.

I couldn't find the link to it on the forums so I just uploaded it instead.

And here's the full logo: http://www.ogre3d.org/images/logo.svg . That's what we use to print our mousemats & T-shirts etc :)

No, there's no body - the head of this model was released free but the body you have to buy.

"you have to buy"... from the model's original source, not Ogre of course

Do you have a link to the "for purchase" body?

I haven't seen it in a while, I think it was used as an example in a pretty early version of Max one time.

While looking I found something really nice though from here:

Yeah, that bump for genitals scares me too ;)

He'd look awesome with trousers on though and he must hang around with the bad Ogre crowd with that mean look, unlike our lovable Ogre who where ever I see him, I picture him grunting with a ponder.

How much would it be to buy "Our Ogre?" Maybe we could take up a collection! I'd contribute to that!

Well, Olaf (as he is usually called in papers on 3d rendering by Intel and other places) seems to have been owned by Viewpoint Digital. But they were bought out by Metacreations. Then Metacreations (former makers of Bryce, Fractal Design Painter, etc) stopped making and sold off all their gfx software and became Viewpoint Corporation, an internet marketing company.

So trying to track down the current owner of Olaf will be a bit difficult.

Hah, I'd ove to have a physical version like that on my desk :)

I never seen the whole body animated - nice. I'd be willing to put up cash to buy the model (even better with animation) if we could trace who owns it now.

Found it. You can buy him from http://www.digimation.com
(A program they created was used to render that animation of him. The animation was done by the guy who caused the dancing baby to be unleashed on the world)

There's 3 versions.
- Simple model for $595. http://www.digimation.com/home/?Content ... ode=VP5658
- Rigged model for $695. http://www.digimation.com/home/?Content ... ode=VP5659
- Rigged model with texture for $1045. http://www.digimation.com/home/?Content ... ode=TP5659

Apparently he used to come with early versions of character studio (along with the damn dancing baby). I wonder what the license at the time said?

Digimation don't have any info on their site about licensing conditions.

It would be amazing if you could buy the rights to the model, so you can have Ogre dolls for kids and programmers.

I'd certainly pay up the cash for one.

Oooh, I'd be willing to donate some money to get that Ogre, rigged and all for use with an Ogre demo

That would be AWSOME! I'll pony up money for that right now! If he could come with the demos and there could be little dolls of him! Hell yeah!

Well, another engine kind of beat us to it (body wise at least).

Power Render (commercial game engine) uses Olaf in their screenshots.

If nobody wants to spent $1045 or the license is too restrictive, I vote we adopt the Standford Bunny. :)

(Hmm, I've got such a feeling of dejavu. I know I've been on the digimation site before...)

Edit: Oh yeah, back in 2004: http://www.ogre3d.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4694

Oops, I should have specified, I was reffering to the Ogre that Sinbad posted a screenshot of... Though, either "fullbody" Ogre will be a vast improvement over just an Ogre head

Never belittle the Stanford Bunny.
He has, umm, martial arts training.

(Hey, he's better than a teapot mesh)

Yep, Francesco's ogre is very cool. Only problem is that it looks a lot like a Warcraft orc. Plus the nudity, we don't want an R rated engine. :)

Hmm, though, I must admit the bunny looks pretty tough, I think it doesn't portray the Ogre engine's strengths :D

I don't think that an Ogre with a little "skin" showing is a big deal ^_^. Plus, simply getting a loin cloth on should be a simple fix - if it requires more funds, just ask the author to do it, and i would still be willing to donate towards that end ;)

Are we starting on this again?

I'd be willing to finish the Ogre I started long ago if I knew people actually wanted a full Ogre. I didn't get very much good feedback on it, so its just sat on my hdd for a while, unfinished. I always planned on finishing him, but was in no hurry. I do have ZBrush and planned on detailing him like that shot there (which incidentally got me started on an Ogre of my own like a year ago when I first saw it on CGTalk ;) ).

Since we are digging this up again, what ever happened to this Ogre? I know Sinbad was talking about using it for Siggraph promotion or some such; did that ever pan out?

It never ended up getting animated, so it's sitting on my hard drive at the moment. I was going to use it in the skeletal animation demo but that didn't pan out. If anyone wants to rig it, be my guest :)

I've emailed Digimation to find out what their usage terms are. In any case, it never hurts to have multiple Ogre meshes to choose from.

On a related note:

Sinbad, I noticed in your blog that you talked about some promotion for Eihort once it's stable. I think the demos could do with some improved art, and I'd be willing to help out on this.
