Just wanted to let you know I've just put a guide with some advices on development, mostly oriented to GSoC students. It's rather generic, so you might find it useful for many other projects.
To other mentors and experts: I think it could be nice if we all could review the guide and extend it with your own advices. This should let students take better decissions and focus on the actual development rather than how this all works
