3D Studio Mesh Exporter tutorial

Post by SpannerMan » Tue May 25, 2004 2:49 pm

Hello there,

One of the modellers in the Critical Supply team, Chain, has made a flash video tutorial to help teach us how to use the 3D Studio Mesh Exporter.
We thought it would be nice to share it with the OGRE community, in the hope of giving any 3D Studio Max beginners some tips on how to use it effectively.

The tutorial shows the following:

- Fixing unit setup
- modeling
- optimizing mesh
- map the object using UVW unwrap
- make material(s)
- add plugin/ogre-buttons to the toolbar
- exporting material and mesh
- converting XML to .mesh
- using the meshviewer and editing the material

The tutorial doesn't include how to make and export animation (yet)...

Not sure how uptodate the tutorial is, but Im sure most of it still applies. We hope others out there will find it helpful :)

This is a true godsend! :D
Baffled by MAX in particular, and 3D editing in general, your flash movie did a great job "demystifying" it.
As I don't have MAX people 'round me, and therefore cannot watch how it's done "live", your movie succeeded in showing OGRE related MAX-editing in action.
Thanks! :)

hey, great tutorial, made it a lot easier to see how things really work. But I don't have the Ogre Tools plug-in exporter for 3DS 6, does anyone know where i can get it? I've been using something similar but it doesnt create the material file properly

Hi McSwan, I will ask Chain, but I think there is no problem if you do so.

Thanx for the great response =)
I will make one for skeleton-animation too later, when I've figured it out myself. First, I must get my motherboard back and format my PC, but after that, I'll try to get it done =)

Even if you can get Spannerman to put those files online again, bear in mind that the exporter has changed a lot since the time it was written.

However, I believe that the advice given (about modeling, mapping) will still be valid. I never saw this tutorial though.

Yes, the advice given should still be valid.

Im sorry, but the tutorial is no longer located on the Spannerworx servers...or should I say, the Spannerworx servers no longer exist. (temporarily, anyway).

Im trying to sort somehting out in the meantime, I'll post back here as soon as the tutorials have a new home.

Well, for the time being you can get the tutorials from a temporary webspace location (click the links at the first post of this thread). Im waiting for another place to hold them, but they will be available from here till then.

could these types of things go into the Ogre servers? As they often disappear with no trace, which would be a pity.

Hey Chain, nice work!

used this tutorial to get started modeling for Ogre,
actually im doing a free assignment for the University, the project we are working on might be continued by other students in the future, therefore i would like to ask you if its okay to use this tutorial in our supporting documentation to get other students up an running with modeling just as easy as we could :)

hope this no problem...,

tia Rick

PS
If you have a real name ;) and/or a website we can link to, to give your credits for this work, we would be glad to hear it.
