Game Dev Team - Relaxed/Unpaid - FanGame RPG Starter Project

A place for employers, project leaders etc to post if they are looking for people to assist with an Ogre-based project. Please only post in this area if you have a _serious_ project proposition for which you already have something to show for.

Game Dev Team - Relaxed/Unpaid - FanGame RPG Starter Project

Post by EkIchiGames »

Greetings, I'm Ashes from EkIchi Games. We are a semi-large game development team just starting in the field of game design and development. To get our feet wet in the RPG-design industry, we decided to go with a free-to-play non-profit fangame of the Star Ocean series, just to have fun and gain experience to do commercial games later on with the knowledge we have gained.

We are fairly relaxed, non-paid...we work for the fun and experience for now until we gain enough exp. to complete our majour original project - a fully 3D MMORPG.

Currently we're looking for just a few positions for the Star Ocean FanGame project.

* C++/Ogre programmer lead. - We have 4-5 C++ programmers with experience, but these guys strive to create our own engine using C++ and Ogre for this game, so we're looking for a lead who is proficient in both C++ and Ogre and willing to work on this engine and lead the other programmers to success. If indeed we cannot find one to program the game from scratch, I, unlike them, am not turned off to the idea of finding a pre-existing engine and modifying it. All we ask is that you be dedicated like the rest of us and have fun, and of course learn lots. I only need ONE programmer, so once I find this one,this spot will be filled.

* Spriter - I am the lead spriter-animator for the game, but I could use some more experienced help (I am experienced as well). In this position you will be spriting character movements, battle animations, monsters, sfx, and other things. Our style represents what is seen in Star Ocean Second Evolution, so look that up if you indeed wish to help with such an area. There's room for 2 more spriters on this team. The work will be shared equally as assignments.

* 3D Modeler/Animator - We have room for ONE more 3D modeler and animator. Our towns/maps will have the pre-rendered billboard effect. Overworlds and battlefields will be full 3D with sprite characters on top. Texturing is key. 3D CGI with 2D anime animations will serve as cinematic cutscenes in this game.

* 2D Animator - Will help in producing 2D character and environment animations. I and main character designer, Sai also work in this area as a med-experienced animators in 2D. We have room for 2 more individuals in this area. Drawings/Sketches in frames will be done via other programs and then exported into photoshop for CGI colouring, then into flash for putting the frames together to be exported into the game's 3D cutscenes.

* 2D Environment Artist - Provides detailed environment images to serve the some animation backgrounds. I only need one artist for this.

---

These are the only current positions we have for this project. We are a relaxed team with loose deadlines. We mostly have fun here, but want to also produce something to go on our portfolios, and to get the Ekichi name recognized in the indy game dev industry. Permanent positions on the EkIchi team for other projects also available, but for now our main focus is getting this game completed.

-ABOUT THE PROJECT-

Title of Game: Star Ocean: Fallen Angels
Genre: RPG Fan-Game
Producer/Publisher: EkIchi Games
Release Date: N/A - Development started Late November 2008
Engine: Custom Engine - Ogre Graphics Engine

Star Ocean: Fallen Angels is EkIchi Game's pilot game and will be the first majour game released from the development team. The game is a prequel to all other Star Ocean games, including 'The Last Hope'. SOFA, as we like to call it, takes place in the period when Nede was the dominating power of the universe, which is before Earth became populated with humans. Having established an almost 'ideal form of government', the planets in the system bent towards Nedian will willingly. However, due to some small factions plotting an uprising against this, the Nedians, with their superiour intelligence and mastery of the Heraldic arts, devised the 'Ten Wise Men' project. Using heraldic-altered Nedian genes, they sought out Nedians to implant with this DNA, making them the perfect form of biologickal weaponry.

Dr. Lantis was the overseer of such a project, and began to scope out the most fit Nedian persons to fulfill such a destiny.

In the far future (after Til The End of Time, even), a hostile dispute has led the top-quality space-pilots to gather in a small section of deep space. Kayci Arpegllo, a human on the force fighting to control inter-planetary disputes, is renowned for her bravery and consistent string of well-fought victories. Her inclination to play 'the hero' has made her an idol to many. Whilst on this mission, she pulls a heroic effort to save an innocent tourist board and finds her fighter-ship damaged after making a near fatal mistake. By means of destiny she is pulled into a time-space warp and transported to planet Nede of the distant past.

The Ten Wise Men are foremostly average Nedians...before they are injected with the heraldry-enhanced cells, they lived out lives of near-peace and sometimes adventure on Nede. Kayci stumbles upon the intellectual scholar Indalecio (you will recognize him as the ultimate antagonist of Star Ocean: The Second Story) and gets sucked into an adventure of epic proportions. The ten are about to recognize each other's existance, but first they must come to terms with themselves...and enlist the aid of some very powerful Celestial beings, the Fallen Angels.

For those who know, the Japanese names of the Wise men each coorelate with an angel. These angels will be depicted in the game.

This game will chronicle the lives of the Ten Wise Men before they become the Ten Wise Men, DURINGtheir transformation, and up to the time period before they are confined to Eternity Space. Direct links to the second Star Ocean game will be provided and abundant, so the connection and flow will match the actual series.

Graphics:

The graphics to this game will heavily resemble that of Star Ocean: The Second Story/Evolution. Anime face-graphics will be present, but unlike Second Evolution, these will be animated with speech/blinking. CGI and anime cutscenes will be present.

The environments of the towns will have the 'billboard' effect like the SO2 game, with sprite characters on top. Overworlds and battlefields will be 3D with sprite characters.

GamePlay:

* Private Actions
* Extensive Item Creation
* Full-active Battles
* Character Relationship Meters
* Killer Moves and 3D Spell Effects
* Co-Op Killer Moves
* Celestial Transformations
* Nearly fully voiced over dialogues
* Anime and CGI Cinematics
* 18 Recruitable Characters
* Skill Leveling System
* Multiple Endings

Soundtrack:

SOFA has a completely original custom score. Multiple soundtracks and remix CDs will be on sale. Our musick has been stated (by players anticipating the release of our games) to be "better than 90% of the 'professional game musick' out there today", some going as far as to say our composer is the next aspiring Matoi Sakuraba (composer acclaimed for creating the soundtracks for the Star Ocean games).

My Favourite quotes from a fan who reveled after they listened to some of our tracks:
Deii: ...Why the hell isn't this as famous as one winged angel or Jenova or some other shitty music?
This is awesome
Jenn: Yea
It's not popular because it was just made in the past dew days >_>
Deii: Oh >_>
Its awesome still
Jenn: This is probably my favorite song for the game so far

Deii: ...Wow, this is better than most professional game music
Some Sample Tracks of SOFA

Please do NOT steal our musick. We have had this happen in the past with people ripping from youtube, forcing us to stop making musick updates for everyone to enjoy. We recently started trying to share again in hopes people would respect us. Please be courteous and don't steal. Our musician works very hard on our pieces. If we find that our musick has been ripped and stolen, we will take down our videos again.

If you end up not finding a proficient Ogre C++ programmer to lead your team in creating your own game engine, consider allowing me to help you and your team get familiar with Zen Engine, a game engine using Ogre, and Zen Worlds, an MMO RPG framework.

The engine is still "alpha" but we are quickly approaching beta stage targeting early March 2009 for our 0.5.0 beta release.

We have several game development teams contributing code to the common areas while concentrating on making their own customizations to the engine for their own games. Although this means we're spending more time making the engine more flexible and extensible, the end results is that you get to draw on the knowledge and experience of a significantly larger group of people.

Give it a few weeks and see if you can recruit an Ogre programmer to help you with your own engine, but if that doesn't work out then feel free to contact me here on this forum or on the IndieZen.org forums.

Good luck with your project. It looks like a fantastic idea.

Thanks! It looks interesting and I will cart this information back to my programmers to see what they think. They know a bit more about programming than I do, I'm just better at adverts and recruitment, so all of that work is left up to me. Haha.

If this can fit to what we need, including 2.5D graphicks and all of that, I can't see why we can't get a start with something pre-existing and whatnot and build from it. I'll go see what they think about this idea and if we can't pull in someone, I'll be glad to give this a good look-over.

May I recommend setting your sights on something a bit more realistic by dropping that first "M" in MMORPG?
Do you need help? What have you tried?

Still seeking an OGRE savvy programmer who can help us jump start this game...
I have other programmers who may wish to join, but are asking OGRE-specific questions I know nothing about...
Most questions revolve around 3D model specifics when applying them to OGRE, so if someone could help us out, that would be nice...
Thank you everyone who has e-mailed, PMed, or replied...
